I think you missed that there are 3 different settings which you can use for lifespan in the game, if you set it to the longest the Sims live for freaking ever. 364+ days.
I do agree that it sucks how they didn't give us sliders to adjust it precisely in TS4 like they did in TS3, especially when you consider they also gave us only 3 rather than 5 options. Just as a comparison:

Fortunately, for those of us willing to use mods, MCCC lets you adjust the lifespan ranges by lifestage to whatever we want.
