What's your play style?

What's your play style? What do you like to focus on? What lives do you typically create for your sims?

Personally, ...I hope this isn't bad, but I guess everyone knows by now that for the most part I play young adult poly households. It's fun for me. I'm romantic, for one thing, and I like having a house full of ongoing kisses and flirting. And it's fun to see what they all get up to. I put dancing "stations" around (with music devices), bars, televisions, computers, painting easels, instruments, hot tubs, anything-goes bushes, big closets, anything their hearts may desire. It's more interesting than just two people, it's more interesting than a family with kids (I'm...not a kid person irl. No maternal instincts, I'm afraid). I'm currently working in a save with...I don't know how many at this point, poly households, and I just go back and forth between them to see what they're doing. I have started using sims from create-a-sim and I really like them. Tbh I just give them all the same aspiration and traits because all I care about is the relationship aspect. Which is like real life too, I guess - I care more about relationships than power or success or...whatever. I mean it's important to have your own interests and etc in real life as a real person, but I have so many sims, I don't have the bandwidth.

Also this was in another discussion, in a poll, but I do love editing houses that are in the game and editing houses that are in the gallery. Some of the houses already in the game, lived in by NPC's, are spectacular.

So what about you?
  • Alrighty, you've left a detailed post, so here's mine. (warning, evidently, it's pretty long XD)

My playstyle is centered around my main Sim going through a long narrative on being "human" (he's actually a divine being, but doesn't know it), then becoming a special kind of vampire to fight against vampires who feed on innocent human beings and other supernatural threats. My game is very heavily modded, so it includes foods for occults and he'll use that to feed himself. This obviously means I'm quite pro-occult, though I don't let them run around in my game unchecked.

Currently, with my Sim as a "human", I'm doing a "completionist" run where I'll have him finish most Aspirations (except the family ones), most careers, and get all distinguished degrees with honors, and this started from a middle-class household. For the time being, he's in a monogamous relationship with his girlfriend, soon to be wife, and will be for a long time, but I'll eventually have him start forming a harem (wife will be supportive, lol), so in a way, I share your enjoyment of poly couples, though in my case, it's just the one guy with a bunch of women who love him very much. Combine that with the vampire theme and the story is similar to the anime Strike The Blood, which was accidental, but eh, it's fun, lol. I'm also a huge romantic in RL, so I like having my Sim romance numerous female Sims. But that isn't to say I'm poly in real life, it's just fun to do so in the game.

Due to the story and some of the lore I came up with, family play is practically impossible for me, which is more than fine with me since I've never been a fan of it. However, for me, it has nothing to do with my views on kids in real life. I'd actually love to have children someday and I have a cat in RL whom I love very, very much, but kids and pets in the Sims have never been that fun for me. However, I like to create alternate protagonists for the story that will eventually meet the main one and I use that opportunity to explore different play-styles, so I may give family play a shot once more if it fits into the story.

And because this is a story, I take screen-shots. A LOT of screen-shots. I currently have almost 7,000 screen-shots and I will easily double that number. I use tons of poses in my game and occasionally hunt for more. With the poses, I enjoy writing out dialogue for the scenes and I also love writing out biographies, personality profiles, etc for the main characters since as a kid, I really liked reading that kind of thing for fictional characters.

Aging is permanently turned off in my game and death only occurs mostly when I want it to or there's a chance it can and it makes sense within the story. I have my Sims maintain their needs for the immersion, but said needs can be filled up and be made less intrusive due to more details I came up with. Another reason I like maintaining my Sims is because I enjoy watching them cook.

For worlds, I like to give the game a sense of geography, so I do not let my Sims travel to other worlds if they feel like they'd be too far away from the others. As an example, if my Sim is living in Britechester, he is not going to go to Sulani unless it's in the context of him moving or going on vacation. He can't just pop into Sulani, then pop out like the game lets you do.

I do not play premades and only use them for background scenery or red-shirt purposes. I also don't download Sims for more characters, I like to create every Sim I use. So when I'm not interested in playing the story, but I still want to play TS4, I like to go in CAS and create a Sim. (heh) I base my Sims off celebrities (sometimes), characters I've seen in media, or just an idea I have. Because of this, I don't create Sims based on people I've met and personally know and I have zero interest making a Sim that looks like me.

I completely ignore holidays. That's actually something similar to what I do in RL. I don't really celebrate them, besides using them as an excuse to go see a movie or eat out.

While I wish I was, I'm not much of a builder. I'd love to be able to create sets I'd need for scenes, but a lot of builders out there have the very bad habit of making their homes not playable, so it's very annoying when I find an awesome-looking home lot only for the lot to confuse my Sims.

And finally, because I put a lot of time into my Sims, even exploring TV Tropes just to see what other traits and backstories I can give them, I get extremely attached to my Sims. I have backups for them in-game and on a separate drive.

What is that tv show where in one episode that sort of thing happens, and the guy is like, "Oh, so I'm like Blade?" And the other guy sarcastically responds, "Yeah, you're like Blade, right." Or something like that. It was funny....I wish I could remember the show...

    Oooh, this is really interesting!

If I were to describe my old gameplay style (dating back to TS2 days), I would say I was a goal-oriented simmer. I would either play young adult sims or families, and I always enjoyed completing aspirations, maxing out skills and reaching the top of career tracks. I never used to think of backstories for my sims, and I never got attached to them.

In 2018, my gameplay style evolved quite a bit. I still enjoy achieving goals in the sims, but I think my style has shifted from purely goal-oriented to a micromanaging storyteller. I still like to play either young adult sims or families, and for some reason they’re never occults. Just a preference of mine, I guess! I also play my game with aging off for active sims as I keep track of my sim’s birthdays, or age-up days rather. Any unplayed sims don’t age at all unless I manually age them up, so I should add I don’t play my game completely realistically either.

I’ll explain what I mean by the term “micromanaging storyteller.” For example, I currently play one sim family and each family member has a fully fleshed out backstory. I create extra sims (secondary characters) and cheat reward traits to achieve the backstory I have in mind for a particular sim. I have a spreadsheet which lists all of my plans and goals for each family member, detailing their planned traits, hobbies, aspirations, primary and secondary skills (what skills do I want my sims to max, which skills should they at least attempt) educations, careers, etc for each of their applicable life stages (infant - elder). I also will list their potential love interests, residences, pets and offspring. Basically, if something is listed or found in a sim’s simology, relationship, skill or career panels, I’ve already detailed it all out in advance. Doing all of this planning is not only a fun and creative thing for me to do, but it gives me more opportunity to tell a story through my gameplay. After playing this way, I’ve found it’s nearly impossible not to get attached to my sims.

We each enjoy playing the game differently, so it’s really cool to read through everyone’s answers! :)

I agree! Your gameplay is super put together and I'm impressed!

I like having goals to work towards when I play, so I like making and playing out challenges. I have countless word documents on my laptop with detailed lists of goals and story lines. I'm currently working on a super sim challenge where I've mapped out everything they'll need to accomplish such as aspirations, skills, careers, etc, and how and when they'll do that.

I usually play with aging off unless part of the challenge in to accomplish something in a short amount of time. I'll usually end up playing with a full household, and I'll have a goal in the back of my mind for each sim, even if they're not my main sim. I like to tell stories within my challenges, and take cues from the sims when developing those stories. I usually randomize traits unless specified for a challenge, and I'll keep those traits in mind while telling my stories. I use cheats sparingly unless I need them to tell a certain story.

I like playing with occults, mostly vampires and spellcasters, but I also have my fair share of normal sims as well. I don't usually play with premades unless I marry them into my family, and I've never really played rotationally, preferring to stick with a single household for each save. I also have a lot of saves, and when I get bored of one I'll jump over into another one. I do enjoy building and even have one save dedicated to rebuilding all the worlds (it's slow going).

Hah, it's funny you say that because my character is black. Definitely a sign that I should check out Blade. Completely accidental. XD
