They are there mainly for decoration/animation now. It's more realistic that sims can climb out without them, and sit on the edge to eat/socialise etc.
If you want to drown them, fence in the pool once they are in it.
I think it's quite realistic to leave a pool using a ladder? :o
It is, but it's unrealistic that they couldn't climb out WITHOUT one. That was my point.
Growing up my local pool had ladders at the deep and shallow ends. The entrance to the changing rooms was in the middle, no ladder there. Easiest to climb out without the ladder in the middle, than go to the end and potentially have to queue at the ladder.
Ah, sorry, like in 1 and 2 you mean, my bad ;) It's odd they can't use the ladder though isn't it?
I tried to find the asnwer to the question by the way (were they able to use a ladder before) and found
this article.
Vaughan said that player reaction to a Sims game without pools was so intense that developers knew they had to rectify the situation as soon as possible. This time around, however, Sims have the ability to sit on the side of pools and climb out without use of a ladder, eliminating the fan-favorite way of knocking them off.
Sitting on the side is new (and great, I think the way sims in and out of the pool can interact with each other has improved anyway), but climbing out 'this time around'?

I must have one headstrong Sims 3 sim :p
