I think the fact it’s easier to implement will have something to do with it as well (after all they could have at least added a delivery system to the electronic way and they haven’t). Click on the computer and it magically appears into your household. The delivery boy/girl animations or buying in a store takes more time of course. Point is, it also adds to immersion for many people, it’s not time wasted.

I don't buy the whole "modern" thing. I think they just took the easy way.
