In adition to what Sindocat said, is it possible there were other factors? How were the kid's needs? How were her grades? I believe if either of those are particularly low, the child may get taken away. Sims won't let you have a kid flunk out of school (before they go to University)
In James Turner's 3 Brother's let's play, one of the brothers had a terrible relationship with both his kids because he had the vampire trait that makes relationships difficult, but neither kid was taken away because despite all the chaos, the kids had food and baths, and even enough sleep - and kept their grades at a decent level. (James also aged them up early, I believe, but the bad relationship started when they were toddlers.)
