I like to think of my sim world kind of like Mayberry, where everybody knows everybody so they stop and talk to each other and ask out the family and how the kids are and that new puppy they just got.
I created a Pet Store (pet stuff really) and I always play test my builds to make sure things go well. I opened the store (at 3 a.m.) and people began to filter in and gather into two small groups and chat. As they chatted, I would notice the blue bar above a head or two, so I would send my sim to talk about buying something. Once that first sim buys something, they start to fall like dominos and it's hard to keep up.
If they didn't chat, but just stopped to buy stuff, the push to get to everyone checked out combined with the time it takes to check them out, would result in fewer sales and a lot of my happy sims leaving in anger. I know a lot of you miss the customers walking to the cash register and checking out there, but in S2 that always took time and a lot of sims in line would get mad at the long wait and leave anyway. I had more problems with S2 than I do with S4, but, for me, S3 was the worst.
@Dannydanbo I tend to take it as you, everybody knows everybody. Where I particularly find this helpful is in a one manned store. For instance, my single sim lady runs an art gallery by herself, no employees at all. So, customers socializing allows her time to go to various customers and suggest, discuss prices, ask about interests, close the deal and ring up customers. As someone else mentioned about the blue bars over their heads, I focus on those sims as I can see they are actively browsing, I leave the others chatting, Then I mingle with the remaining chatters, offering suggestions, etc. If I notice someone who really is there to be angry, upset others or cause drama, my sims is directed to kick him/her out (ask to leave). I never restock until I close the gallery. I usually open the gallery 4 days per week Monday-Thursday, from 9am til 6 or 7pm (I have her paint on the other days to replenish the stock) My sims can handle this load very well all by her simself. Yeah, this works for me, so, no I don't find chatting customers annoying for the most part.
