Why did the incense catch everything on fire?

I had an incense burner setting on the coffee table, with the burning part turned away from anything that could come in contact with the hot part. Someone came to the door and my sim was gone only long enough to invite them in. Then the next thing, the incense burner, small flower arrangement, coffee table, and rug underneath the coffee table all caught on fire.

I've had this item before and never had this happen. Is there a place I can put the incense burner so it won't burn down my house?

Incense needs a lot of space around it. If there is anything anywhere near it, it starts a fire. I had to work that out the hard way, when I first got Spa Day, and was using it a lot to boost moods while he worked at his computer. He had to replace various things around his desk, from wall decor to rugs to potted plants, to his career reward computer, over the course of many fires, until I learned the incense burner needs a LOT of space.

Can you place it on a table? Or will it burn the table too? I haven’t even used it because of the fire aspect....
  • @SheriSim57 yes - if it catches on fire anything it sits on catches on fire. The fires don't happen every time = seemingly every 10% of times it is used. So I find the mood altering benefits outweigh the risks. but don't place near expensive objects because sooner or later there will be a fire. The fire seems more manageable and less fierce than cooking fires.
  • I've had at least three incense fires on coffee tables. I usually light them to get the moodlet then put them out fairly soon afterwards and always at this point if I have my sim leave the room.... Unless I want a possible fire that is. They don't seem to work on demand as well though. :D
If it's near or on anything flammable it's possible.
  • Incense is the most dangerous thing in game after the winterfest tree... Never try to light that thing up.
  • Incense burnt through a wall and destroyed a dresser, even though the wall remained intact. (I didn't discover it until a few days later, when I clicked on the dresser and got the option to 'replace'.) That stuff is lethal. (I still use it, sometimes, for a mood and a little random havoc in my game.)
