I've only had CL for a few weeks and I caught it on sale. I generally do like it in conjunction with GT. GTW is probably the weakest EP for me. I got GTW included with the base game and I've only recently started playing the careers for it. I was expecting something like Ambitions - which it was not. The juxtaposition of aliens and only 3 new careers was weird. If you don't care for aliens and I don't and if you don't have a specific sim that you want to follow to one of those 3 careers then there isn't much to GTW. (I remember running all over Twinbrook, redesigning the town, making over all the residents and putting out fires). Now I've played the doctor career and it's kind of fun but the bugginess is a real issue and from what I hear, the detective career is broken as well. That leaves me with a game with some aliens who annoy me and a few objects/clothes/hairstyles - when I wanted something with the options of Ambitions or a number of solidly functional careers. It feels very childish.
I'm just saying that because I think GTW is a weaker EP than either GT or CL which I like together. I understand the frustration around editing apartments though I haven't really ever had a desire to build my own. I used to build more in Sims 2 and 3 and now I do more renovation. I do wish that there would be a few more lots - a few more penthouses and venues. I completely agree with the person who said that there should be space for and content for Dine Out venues. Yeah, I get it that not everyone has Dine Out but people who don't might want to buy it to add restaurants to San Myshuno.
I agree about the complaints about all the townies spawning weirdly. I pretty much quickly edit or delete them all now. I like the amount of diversity. I like how a few of the neighborhoods feel really full of vibrant townies, but yes, I use CAS.fulleditmode to keep things varied in my game and to correct most of the messed-up looking townies so that they are stylish and usually attractive.
I like a lot of the CL content though. I live in the metro area of a major city myself and it does have that city feel. I actually like most of the clothes. I enjoy and replay the festivals as story elements in my rotations. I send my young sims to party in Windenburg or to be up all night doing karaoke. I actually do like the varied foods as that is a great feature of where I live myself. I'm finding it to mostly be a fun and replayable expansion that is factoring into my game regularly. I also like the more flexible careers and would like to see more like that.
One more criticism is that I think too many of the apartments have negative lot traits that are over the top. I'm going to have to edit out some of the apartments with features like "gremlins" to create more normal options for my sims. It is annoying that some of the really negative features can't be edited. A "needs TLC" apartment is funny but it's not something I'd live with long term. At a certain point, features like that just become a distraction.
I do like how the apartments feel different than the suburbs and I rotate into them regularly but I still go back and play suburban families. I wouldn't send all my sims to San Myshuno but I like visiting the ones that are there.
