Why don't vampire autonomously drink inventory items?

When they hit yellow, they really have many hours before they'll either die or attack someone autonomously (if they don't have the tamed thirst power.) I've seen them autonomously drink plasma packs in their inventory, fish-made ones, when they hit red, but when they're yellow the thirst really isn't that bad.
