Why won't my Sims' cat eat autonomously?

I didn't used to have issues with Pickles, the cat, not eating. Then I rearranged the kitchen because my Sims, for whatever reason, could use their oven and stove for some types of food, but not for others (I think this was either an issue with the stairs or levels on the other side of the wall...). I really like the current layout and think that if my kitchen were arranged this way, where I have the cat's dish is exactly where I would put it in real life. It just fits there.

The problem is that she won't eat from it without being called to eat. I know that if her icon goes red, I need to get one of my Sims to call her to eat. When they do so, she can reach the food with no problem.

Here's the layout:

I have double checked and I'm able to place the bowl there without using MOO. I have no doubt that some of the clutter was placed with MOO though.

Like I said, when it was out in the open, she didn't have an issue. That being said, I do remember having a Sim dog once who would always give me starving pop-ups even though his bowl was out in the open.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

  • Have you tried to relocate the feeding dish to maybe next to the table and see if she will eat on her own if it's in a different spot?
  • Maybe the bowl is placed without any cheats, but other items and furniture around it have been placed with bb.moveobjects or maybe not but they are just blocking the way. You should try to place the bowl in the middle of the room, or even in an empty room or an empty area in the garden and see what happens (it has to be accesible, not a room without door). If your cat can eat like that the reason why it couldn’t eat before might be because another object was blocking the way. Sims AI are sometimes glitchy.

Maybe try to remove or, a better option, move upwards the furniture on top of the bowl
  • When you use the MOO cheat, it can cause a lot of routing issues. This can cause an autonomous action to cancel itself because the path is not clear.

I love the MOO builds in the gallery, but man alive do I have to tweak everything so my Sims can actually function. I've since stopped downloading those builds to use because it's way too much hassle. I think one of the reasons Sims 4 objects are so huge is to accommodate the routing. I remember reading a dev statement that if they made dog houses they would have to be huge for the proper routing paths so that's one of the reasons they just made the pet beds. This implicates that pets especially need a lot of routing space.
  • I never use MOO and I've had pets/pet bowls just randomly not function. Definitely move it, replace it, turn off cheats if they are on, etc. If it still happens, remove mods and CC. If it still happens vanilla, especially with another family, report it on the bug forum and share the bugged save.
