Sims 2 was multiplayer on console. If you have a household you could play a few characters in the household each. That was especially work for those non family just playing young adult sim players
I control all 8 sims at once. Only ever played Sims on PC as I disliked console. Mostly, disliked for the controls that were on console. What you just explained still does not make a multiplayer mode sound appealing. I just do not see it as a viable multiplayer game.
I would never suggest it being the sole core of the game, just the option could be nice
