WORKAROUND - Grim not showing up when summoned
I am using Windows 10 still because some of my programs that make my computer more accessible to me are 32-bit programs. The file locations may be/look different than Windows 11. The principles are still the same.
Read This First:
Make sure you only click folders and files that appear underneath This PC. These are the folders and files that are actually on your hard drive(s) and not in The Cloud.
Back up your current user folder - To do this, follow these steps:
Launch File Explorer - When you start it, you will most likely see your Quick Access folders first, don't click on any of those. The reason for this is: if you have Microsoft OneDrive, the Quick Access folders are usually tied to OneDrive. Again, make sure you are navigating to folders under This PC. You can navigate through your files in the left side panel or click on them on the right side of the screen.
Double-click on the Documents folder.
Double-click Electronic Arts folder.
Highlight the Sims 4 folder but don't double-click it.
Right click and go to Rename - Rename your Sims 4 folder to Sims 4 Backup
Copy this folder (Ctrl-C) and Paste it (Ctrl-V) a place you can find it if you need it - I usually put mine on the Desktop. Once it is somewhere you can easily find it if you need it, follow the next step .
You can now delete the Sims 4 Backup folder that is still in the Electronic Arts folder because you have a copy on the desktop. Now your Electronic Arts folder should now be empty. Don't panic.
Launch the EA App and hover over The Sims 4 (You may or may not have other games in the left side panel) Click the blue Play Button. This will start the game. Because you deleted your Sims 4 folder, the game will run as if it were running for the very first time. Technically, you are running it for the very first time! ALL of your settings, saved games and mods are removed. For example, I play my game with no music on. If I follow these steps correctly, I will hear music.
Exit the game immediately! DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ON THE MAIN MENU OTHER THAN EXIT GAME.
Launch File Explorer again. Make sure that you are navigating through files and folders under the This PC as before
Double-click on the Documents folder.
Double-click Electronic Arts folder.
You should now see your Sims 4 folder. Double-click it.
Delete localthumbcache.package and avatarcache.package files.
You may be tempted to go into the backup folder you made before to put back your Saved Games and Mods - DO NOT DO THIS! There are too many mods that will cause the event not to work properly.
You will need fresh saves (one every week - I named mine Gim Event 1 and I will name next week's save Gim event 2, and so on) to complete the Grim Reaper Event. I know this seems harsh - and it is, but it's a workaround so we're all kind of screwed by it if we want the event to work properly and get all of the items.
Run the game again in the EA App with the blue Play button as before.
Adjust your settings the way you like them - DO NOT ENABLE MODS
Start a new save
Make 2 YA Sims ONLY - Occult Sims are OK, but no pets, infants, toddlers or children. (or get them off the Gallery) - One you want to play with and one you will kill to have Grim show up at the house!
Enable Cheats - Press Ctrl-Shift-C and type: testingcheats true then press Ctrl-Shift-C again to close the cheats window.
I also strongly recommend turning autonomy off for the Event tasks. That way you can direct them to do Event tasks and they're not getting glasses of water every 5 seconds - because you won't have mods to stop Sims from getting water or putting plates on top of half walls.
DO NOT PAUSE OR SAVE YOUR GAME UNTIL THE EVENT TASKS APPEAR - THIS WILL BREAK THE EVENT.
Try to do the tasks in order. It's much easier and there is less chance of something going wrong.
When you get to the Summon Grim Task - Buy the Grimophone and click Summon Grim Reaper. You must do this even though there are reports of Grim not showing up at all. As it is an event task, and you must do it to do the next event task. The next task after that will be: Meet or Socialize with the Grim Reaper. This is why you have another Sim (to kill.)
Switch control to your "Sacrificial Sim" - If you forget to switch control to your other sim, the next step will kill your main sim. I found out the hard way the first time I did this!
Make the Second Sim sit down. Shift-Click on that Sim and select Kill... Your only option will be to kill that Sim by an (Invisible) Rabbit Attack. Click that. Now Grim has no choice but to show up : ) YAY!
Pause the Game so Grim doesn't disappear. Shift-Click on Grim, Click Add to Household. Grim's face should now appear on the bottom next to your main sim.
Click on him as you normally would to meet or socialize with him, I clicked Ask about Day.
That Event Task should now complete.
After that, you can remove Grim from your household unless you want him to stay but he might be needed for other tasks during the event so I would remove him.
That's as far as I got. I then paused my game and wrote everyone this guide! If you have Questions or issues, don't hesitate to reach out to me.
Important Information about OneDrive! Please Read!
Upon further investigation, OneDrive is linked to your This PC files! Do not delete, move, copy or click ANY FILES! before you do one extra step! (I found out the hard way this morning.
You MUST disable OneDrive at Startup otherwise the above solution WILL fail!
To do this: Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE
Choose Task Manager and go to the Startup tab
Scroll down until you see Microsoft OneDrive
Left-Click it and then Right-Click it
Choose Disable
Please note that Microsoft OneDrive will not be deleted from the Startup List. But as long as you choose Disable it will not run at Startup.
If you need it to run at startup at a later time, follow the above steps, but choose Enable instead of Disable. Sorry for the confusion. I assure you that I wrote this addendum as soon as I discovered the issue.
