I have an interesting story about that topic. When the first live action 101 Dalmatians movie came out, people were afraid that there'd be people who'd see all the cute dalmatian puppies on screen, get one on a whim, then abandon it a few months later. Animal shelters were expecting it to happen. I can't speak for my entire country (obviously), but it didn't happen in my area. I know it didn't happen because I was working at an animal shelter at the time. We never heard of any abandoned dalmatian puppies in our whole area in the months after the movie was released, in our shelter and in the other nearby shelters.
Perhaps it might have happened elsewhere, but I'm just saying the issue was not as bad as people thought it would be.
