The funny thing is I really don't remember any of this being a issue until now. In Sims 2 we had raccoons and skunks. You could tell your sims children to adults to go pet the wild skunk. They usually ended up getting sprayed. I don't remember there being any community upset about that, nor have I heard of anyone going out to give it a shot in RL because they saw it in the game.
Those Sims should have had the "bad smell" vibe for about 3 Sims weeks! That's the time it took a friend of ours to get rid of their stink when they disturbed a skunk under a cabin they had. :# British foxes can be kept as pets but to put it in the vernacular "They don't arf stink" and as I found on another site "Something to bear in mind is that all species of fox will u rinate on what they want to be theirs. This cannot be curbed by neutering, litter training or even domestication as the domesticated Siberian silver foxes still do this" (I expect that won't be allowed in the game though). Shame!
