@JAL I have yet to play a strictly historical save but I would recommend you watch MiraRae_ on twitch or MiraRae on youtube. She only plays historical sims and she is quite good at it. If you watch her during her live streams she will answer questions, if you have any.
She has brought up in the past there is nothing to yet to stop the when needing to travel, to use the phone, and asked if anyone knew of any yet.
I found with the release of horse ranch, it's is just perfect for this issue. You get on your horse, and you say travel with, to or somethign from the dropdown, can't quite recall since I haven't used the pack in a few months. Basically take the horse to the location , and when loaded on the lot, you're on the horse, as if he really took you there.
Also can walk to other places near by and then click on visit residence or lot.
As for that always obsessed with your phone update we got with high school years, there is a mod for that, but I forgot who make it because it never worked with my system. Quick google search just now had be find :

As for electronics, on a lot of the historical homes, I have no tv or electronic and if you just have books all around, they will natually turn to reading when bored to enjoy themselves.
I was going to mention MC Command Center for edit sims in cas function but recently @Caerfinon mentioned to me on a similar topic, the MC Command Center Dresser was how to do that efficiently. I will have to give that a try. He also recommended The Fashion Authority Mod, which I have yet to, but been meaning to try.

There was a book I put on reserve from the Library, which was a catalog used for Victorian architecture in that time period of America. I totally forgot about it and when I find the name I will post it here to you. Will take me some digging but I wanted it completely for this very same purpose.
