I just often like to make money outside of a rabbithole job. It's more satisfying to me. Not sure if they are unusual ways though.
I just do whatever is natural for the sim to do. If they are a musician they go out and get tips.. same for a comic. If they are an artist they paint and so on. If they craft they craft.. Since some ways give more money than others my sims might do one skill/craft that I know pays well and then their dream on the side until they get good enough at it? (like being a songwriter/performer).
In the beginning starting a new sim I go with harvesting and selling and breeding frogs also. Just to get enough while they skill up something to make some money (and follow the curators aspiration at the same time).
Oh had to add probably my most unusual way is moving sims in or being a black widow... lol. Again it depends on the sim type.
