I tend to structure the kids lives so that they have time to work on skills and still have playtime.
In my toddlers test family, the mom gets up around 7-8am. During this time she usually goes to the bathroom and bathes, if the toddler is still asleep when she's done she has some breakfast.
The toddler gets up around 9:30, the mom changes her into her outfit for the day, makes her breakfast, and then makes sure she goes potty.
After that she's free to play around the house (or run out the door and explore as she's done a couple times now).
Around 4pm mom works with her on either flash cards or just general stuff, so she gets in some skill building.
At 6:30 mom starts dinner, and once done she feeds the toddler. After dinner she gets her bath, and if she needs it uses the bathroom again. She is then free to play and socialize with the other household members while mom cleans up until 10, when she is read to sleep. Unless she has been a real brat that day, then she just gets put to bed without a story.
In my main household however, the kids are heavily structured.
They get up at 6:30, I check and see if they finished their homework from the night before, if not they finish it at this point and risk skipping breakfast.
Once they go to school Mom tends to clean up the place. As soon as they get home from school they're marched to the kitchen table to do their homework.
After homework and extra credit are done they take their baths and wash up for dinner. Dinner is usually on the table by 6:30-7.
After dinner (depending on the day) they're either allowed to play or they're sent to the basement music room to practice their instruments of choice until bedtime.
Weekends are a bit more lax, but I still expect the kids to work on skills. If all of their homework is done and I feel they have been productive that week they can hang out with friends (not to say they done during the week, but I don't tend to let them stay out the whole day on school days).
