MALWARE, MOD MANAGERS, AND RELATED WARNINGS
- fgeh – Pose Manager – triggers Modguard. Investigation of the files does not find anything of blatant concern, but anything that triggers Modguard will stop the game running (that’s a Modguard function) and using it will mean that you can’t use Modguard to protect you from actual malware.
- SYVR – SimsSweep – I advise against using this tool, for five different reasons, and one of which would concern me (see below).
- tldr: (1) It triggers Modguard according to a player report, and may conflict with it. Its similar function (malware-checking in script files) can be overridden by multiple players reporting a file as not malware but does not say if any human checks that these reports are accurate. (2) This tool claims to be able to “read” crash logs; BUT only EA can actually interpret these. (3) It claims to map errors codes to a specific cause; BUT many error codes have multiple possible causes, which can change patch to patch. I can only assume there could be other things the tool claims to do but can’t. (4) NO mod managing/“health” tool should require registration! There is NO reason you should need to ever pay money for mod managing etc. Especially when there are already free tools available. (5) This complex tool is created by a person whose only mods are a few very simple non-script mods from earlier this year. They have no demonstrated prior Sims expertise with script files, CC, or mod support.
Additional Advice
If you use script mods, you should be have TwistedMexi’s Modguard: Mod Malware Protection mod installed. Download it from TwistedMexi or Curseforge.
If you must use a mod manager/checking tool, first look at who’s making it, and whose support they have.
- Has the tool been around for a long time?
- Is the creator a long-time modder who clearly shows deep understanding of Sims mods?
- Does the creator have a track record of general mod and CC support or is working with named people with that track record?
It is clear that outside people are coming into Sims tool creation and charging money for complex tools they don’t have the Sims knowledge to create. Do not trust them.
If you choose to use any mod manager/checking tools at all, be sure to know what it does and what it doesn’t. Watch out for file renaming (this can lead to duplicates if you aren’t careful to find and delete old files being updated). No mod manager/checker is a complete substitute for knowing how to manage your mods, knowing how to do accurate 50-50 testing, and following mod and malware news.
