Are you running the game on a PC, Mac or one of the consoles?
From your description, it sounds like the game did not save the last time you played when you quit playing. I've done that too many times to count by just hitting exit rather than save and exit. You might have done that. Another thing is that the save might have corrupted somehow and now won't load. If that is the case, then you might be able to recover a more recent version of the bad save that has your changes rather than have to play the one that did load. Just use the Load Menu and use the recover button on the right, next to the delete button, choose the save to recover and a new save will be created. And there was a bug a while back, now fixed, where saves didn't save and gave you an LE using the save option but would save properly when using the save as option. So, make sure your game is up to date patchwise so you have that fix if you've been playing offline and haven't updated in a while.
Another thing you can do is use the save as option rather than the save option. That has helped at times with saving issues.
If you are on a console, both consoles have limited save files which, if memory serves me correctly is they can only have 10 saves in total. I don't know what happens when you reach the limit as I play on PC and can have many more save slots. But even PC and Mac have limits on how many you can have. I have noticed that the more saves you have, the slower the game brings the choices up when you go to load one. So, I just limit myself to 10 or less just so I don't have to deal with the lag there.
