im trying to adopt cats. the event never started and the cats disappeared.

I started an adoption for two kittens. the agent brought the cats in but no event started. I played with them for a while but when I tried to adopt one of them they both disappeared. and the agents tag said changed to vendor instead of adoption agent and the crate is still in the house. I then closed and opened the game and nothing changed. My sim went on the computer and tried to adopt the same two cats again and when the agent came again the event still didnt show up but it let me adopt them. the crate is still on the floor and it says on the computer that an adoption event is still in progress?? I have no idea of what to do. this is in an apartment if that matters?
