MODS Transfer Crashing my Game

HELP!

I am a long-time Sims player and I recently got a new laptop. I have a large(er) mods folder that I transferred into Google Drive and then redownloaded into my mods folder and my game has been glitchy ever since. All of the mods were functional on my old computer because I am really diligent about updating my mods for this reason. I have done everything I can think of to troubleshoot and cannot get the game to work with my mods. The only thing that does work is having no mods in my game, which sort of ruins it for me.

I took all my mods out and categorized them into CC and script and ran through them to make sure they were all working. I put my CC mods in and they all worked, but then I tried adding my script mods one at a time (and yes, booting up the game individually each time to test it). Then if I found a script mod that would crash the game (ie. my game crashes on the loading screen, or never loads, and then I get an error message - I'll include a screenshot), I would take it out but then all of my mods don't work.

I've redownloaded the game, I've run a repair out of the EA app (could switching from Origin to EA be the problem?), I've toggled the script mods enabled button in the settings multiple times, I've taken my mods folder out to reset the folder itself, I've taken my sims folder out to reset it, I've tried brand new downloads of my script mods, I've run my mods through a 'broken mods' program and checked them individually, and I just cannot get it to work.

Any help would be really appreciated, I'm at a loss for what to try next.

  • @LissKa2105  Please create another clean user folder: move the Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and launch the game to create a new folder.  Enable mods and custom content, and quit.  Don't add any of your existing content to the new folder. Download a fresh copy of one mod known to be updated for the current patch level, and please use a mod that's popular enough that there would be reports of it not working.  However, use a different browser than your typical one to download the mod.  If it needs to be unzipped, right-click the file and select Extract, using Windows's own extractor rather than a third-party tool.

If this doesn't help, please let me know what antivirus you use.

    Hi,

    That helped for sure!

I downloaded some really well-known mods and those worked. I used a new browser and checked and triple-checked the mods and they didn't crash my game. But the working is inconsistent. Mods that should work and the community says they work don't. Is there a way I can deep-dive to see if they will work?

Also new development, I can't download any new CC content and put it in my game without it crashing. So, the script mods I can download and sometimes work but the CC mods cant? I'm not sure I understand the problem.

Your help is really appreciated, thank you thank you!

@LissKa2105  Personally, I'd always test out a new mod or cc item in a new Sims 4 user folder, first moving the existing one out of Documents > Electronic Arts (or renaming it) so the game creates a new one and then adding only that mod.  I understand that can be tedious though; you may want to do this in batches.  Keep using the different browser, and if you use an antivirus, make sure it has exceptions set for Sims 4 and the EA App and isn't flagging your downloads.

I don't really know why this would happen either, but an overzealous antivirus would be one explanation.  Another might be if you have Windows Defender's Controlled Folder Access enabled.  On a different note, if you use OneDrive, make sure it's not full and not having issues syncing your files, or it may help to pause syncing for the moment.
