Recoloring of CC - Etiquette Question

If a creator of a piece of cc says, 'no recoloring allowed', do they just mean, 'don't recolor and then offer your recolors for downloading' or do they mean, 'don't ever recolor my work, ever'? I want to recolor a cc top for a sim, and obviously, if I never post a pic of her anywhere, the creator would never know, but I want to keep the option open for posting pics of her (I may use her in a story). Do I need to just choose a different top, lol? Or if I don't offer the top for downloading and if I, obviously, credit the creator, is that considered acceptable? I could just direct message the creator, I guess, and ask, but I was just kind of wondering if there are general rules of etiquette on this sort of thing.

  • There is no general etiquette. You would need to ask or look at the specific creator's ToS (if you care enough to do that)

Me, personally? Even if they said personal recolors were not allowed, I'd still do it if I wanted to. It's ridiculous to not even allow people to edit something for just themselves, the CC itself was created entirely on that principle.

  • Yeah, that's a very good point. Still, rather than make the creator angry, I think I'll just choose another top. :/
His/her ToS doesn't mention recolors for personal use, just says, no recolors allowed and "Please do not re-upload or don't use my textures. Please don't claim as your own." I wouldn't be re-uploading or claiming the work, but I guess I would be using their texture, so I'll just avoid any issues by choosing something different. Thanks for the input!
