Sim can't resume or scrap book in progress

I have two sims trying to write books. The first sim can't resume writing a book she's in the middle of, but she can scrap it and start a new book. The second sim can neither resume writing nor scrap it, so she just can't write at all. I do have mods, but nothing new.
