Yes, there's one plate at a table and a cake on a coffee table, with a piece of cake next to it. I scoured the home, moving furniture around, but I couldn't find any misplaced plates other than those that I noticed.

I went back in to do as you said, but now it won't let me put the plate back in the house. It says [system error]. I can put the cake on a table but when I delete it, the chairs and cake are back in the household inventory. Is there no way to purge the household inventory??

@Mitsu2040 The plate is probably what's causing the issue. Does it end up in your household inventory when you delete the table ? Can you load the lot when it's in your household inventory ?

I went ahead and put it in unfurnished and began the tedious process of furnishing it again. I also started a new family, then merged the old one and saved it as new in the gallery. I'm able to play now, but it's unsettling to know that this could happen at any time and I have to go through all that again.
To answer your question, I had put the plate in the inventory manually when I went in through build mode and at that time I was able to put it back on the house but the even though the "clean up" option was available for my Sims, they couldn't actually perform the action. I left it in the inventory in case there was a way to delete it from there. But after my latest load of the game, it didn't let me put it back in, just said 'system error'.
