I tried to play pretty vanilla initially, but I wanted to do a story recreation that required I control births a bit, so I downloaded MCCC just for that. Then I found a bunch of little annoyances and found myself looking into small mods that made those tweaks. Like I finally got City Living and wanted to use the vendor stalls in random places, so I have a mod that activates them without my sim having to hire anyone when they are visiting the venue.
I also like that some things in sims aren't super realistic. Like I don't want a realistic childbirth mod, I like the way it is in game. I actually miss the plumbbob birth from Sims 2...still my favorite, especially for alien births. And I think it's great when you are tired you can give your date a hug (or not) and just go home, lol. And you'll still be cool the next day.
Most of the CC I have is for Men and kids, because EA neglects them. Women have more than enough and get more with every pack, so I tend not to bother.
I also couldn't afford expansions at first, so I ended up with a bunch of base-game compatible CC objects for Tots and Infants that I like and have just kept.
