Re: Build mode glitches after April 16th update

I am going to go into extensive detail about the issues I’ve had with this, and what I’ve done to try and alleviate these problems.

To begin, I thought I was the only one with this issue. I searched extensively for several days without any results until now. While this is unfortunate, I’m glad to see I’m not the only one! Overall this issue can be generally described as having build mode features leak into live mode, and controls not working as a whole once entering build mode. It appears that the issue is triggered by entering build mode, and I can’t definitively identify other causes.

Things to take into consideration:

  • I purchased and installed the City Living and Vampire DLC on the same day this occurred, however it is coincidentally the same day a major update was released.
  • I owned Parenthood DLC weeks prior to this issue.
  • I am using a PS4.
  • I personally know two others who have the same issue. They run PS4 also, and have the same DLC as me. They bought everything (the game and DLC) all on 04/16/19.
  • For issues involving buttons not responding at all, I tested it with a brand new controller as well as my common use one for consistency.

Here is every issued I’ve expired since 04/16/19 regarding this, and persists to this very moment:

  • Can not rotate items in build mode.
  • Items will not sell, but rather will duplicate upon attempt. You can get it to sell, but with multiple tries.
  • Items have issues when using square to re-color, will not work most times.
  • Grid lines will appear in live mode when toggling R3 instead of centering on a sim.
  • Grid lines will not disappear upon toggling it in build mode, and will transfer to live mode as well.
  • Can’t use L2 and R2 to switch sims while in live mode. Pressing the buttons did nothing.
  • When trying to switch floors, it will skip one so you can’t get to certain ones. So if I have a house with three floors, and I am on the first I could only access the first and third floor. This applies while in both build and live mode.
  • Note: I can certainly say, at least in my experience, that all of the issues listed above are easily the most common problems and this is usually where it begins. From there it gets worse, it’s only the beginning. However, it doesn’t mean that the issues below aren’t equally as annoying or important. They will occur enough to make note of it.
  • Allignment of objects is completely skewed at times, meaning I can’t place say a carpet where I want because the game is forcing my cursor to certain spots. Also became a major problem with windows personally, it would auto place windows in certain spots. Note: there  is a work around where if you just place the item first where it’s forcing you too, then pick it up after it sort of helps you have freedom to place.
  • Whenever I hover over any button in the game, such as Play for example when choosing the household to play as, it shows I can use triangle for quick eye dropper tool and square for quick design tool. This isn’t normal, as that’s a build mode feature.
  • Whenever placing windows and doors, it would be facing the wrong way. Such as the outside part facing the inside. There was no way to fix this, and it didn’t happen when placing on some walls but did to others consistently.
  • Generally when issues are occurring you may have to press the same button numerous times to get it to work, such as X when selecting an item to place.
  • Using the D-Pad in general when this is happening has the opposite effect in build mode compared to live mode. It’s hard to describe, but for example say I am scrolling through a list of objects to buy. When using the D-Pad if I press Left to go left, it will also trigger the ability to change my walls. Like how you can show 1no walls, some walls, or all. So similarly, when I press Up to go up on the list of items it also brings me up a floor on my home. This happens when in build mode when trying to use the D-Pad in any capacity. These things never happened before to my knowledge. After this also, sometimes once I went into build mode my camera became stuck at a certain angle.
  • When in build mode, there are two cursor modes but I would be stuck in one. To explain, I mean how you can free-roam with your cursor and move it with your joystick around the screen. Then the other mode where you move the D-Pad or joystick and it moves only from button to button. Well, I would get stuck only being able to move from button to button. Sometimes, I even wouldn’t be able to select anything during it so I had to close the application.
  • Many times the game would actually just freeze in build mode, and I would have to close the application as it was not responding.
  • In some instances although more rare compared to the others, most of the buttons would work while in build mode. Such as the D-Pad not responding, or the other side with triangle and square etc..
  • Probably unrelated to this because it isn’t build mode specific, but whenever a sim invited me to go somewhere like a festival my sim never goes. My sim could be doing absolutely nothing when accepting the invitation, but it they never go.

How I tried to fix it:

  • With the advice of their Twitter support I tried many things over the course of several days. I tried reinstalling the game three times, and restoring my license twice. I also tried saving my files on USB, and removing it as suggested by the Twitter support. I would then reinstall the game without my saves, download the DLC, and then reapply the saves. No matter what I tried, every new household I made (on new saves) encountered these issues. I also did power off my console completely between these attempts, and even restarted it after the installation was complete the final time.
  • I did other testing of my own to see what specifically triggers this but I can’t conclude that a specific action does, other than just going into build mode in any way runs the risk. It does appear that going into build mode more frequently makes it worse as time goes on though. In general, as time goes on you will eventually have to close the game or just reinstall it because of how much the issues start to stack.
  • I first thought going into build mode straight from the map is what triggered it, however since then I’ve seen this isn’t the case. It does it if you are in a household, and enter build mode from live mode too. I also tested it with families who had cheats enabled vs those who did not. I tested it with old, and new families all on different save files. This all  with the same bad results. Also, when I say “it does it” I mean any of the listed issues I have above may happen. Maybe all of them at once, or maybe only a few because it’s different every time.

Temporary fixes:

  • Restarting the game usually works, but not for long.
  • Restoring your license may or may not work. I speculate it’s because the application closes, not actually because of restoring the license.
  • Reinstalling the game helped for a longer period of time, however in the end it’s such a waste because it happens again anyway.
  • Sometimes I would just exit to main menu and it would help, others it wouldn’t. This I found to be the least effective way as the issue comes back very quickly compared to others.
  • Note: none of these were actually effective in terminating the problem. Even though I day it’s a temporary fix, how effective it was for me may be purely coincidental.

In conclusion:

  • Build mode is “leaking” into live mode, and what is left of build mode barely is functional. This makes it a pain, and waste of time to attempt and build.
  • Generally the controls for build mode just get mixed up with other controls for different modes, or build mode entirely refuses to cooperate with the buttons you are attempting to use. This quite literally applies to every button with the exception of the touch pad, start/options button, and share button.
  • If I find more issues that are not already listed, I will add them if I can edit this comment. If not, I can reply to my own comment and add it there.
  • Twitter support did suggest I post everything here so this can better be solved, so with all the time I took to compile this information I truly hope it’s worthwhile. Even if it just gives other players peace of mind that it is not their system that’s the issue. Also, thanks for reading this considering how long it is.

@XxSilverPhoenix  Eloquently listed every single issue I’m having too. Word for word, ALL of those things happen with me.

I just quit the game then after trying to place a fridge- during selection, the D pad removed the walls and sent me down into the basement area. After selecting the fridge I wanted, I pressed up on the D pad, and it took me to the roof level. Selecting down took me straight back down to basement level.

This is just getting worse. Building or editing the smallest thing has become so tedious and troublesome. I really hope there’s a fix on the way.

I should also add that the music keeps overlapping. The load screen music doesn’t stop after I’m in a household, or build mode.

  • @KushKylie I also noticed something with the music too, but I wasn’t sure if I was only imagining things. After all, new music was introduced with the expansions I purchased so I shrugged it off.

I also notice I have to very often use reset object because my characters are freezing completely, however I don’t know if this can be attributed to the bug. Almost too often, and when it does only one sim freezes but the others move along. I will note that this didn’t happen to be often before. Specifically WooHoo freezes every time, while also lagging the game. Then trying to interact with children can freeze a lot too. Again though, no idea what is causing it. I do have a large home and household, maybe it just comes with that.

Today I didn’t run into the issue as often which was weird, however once I finally did nothing at all worked. I couldn’t change camera angles, or change what walls are shown. Couldn’t use L1 L2, L2 R2. Or any of the D-pad for that matter. I couldn’t rotate anything, and the list goes on I just got slapped with all the issues at one time... it was all frustrating.

@XxSilverPhoenix  Lag has been a big issue for me too. WooHoo freezes often. Sims forget their assigned tasks over and over. Sometimes it takes telling them four or five times just to get one task done. In those moments, I usually save the game- that tends to get them all moving again- particularly when they’re frozen mid-WooHoo.

It does get very frustrating. Tedious things tend to make me boil. 😞

The other day, I did some building in my first created house. The house started acting like an NPC residence after I went back into live mode.

My sims couldnt access the house. The ones inside it were stuck inside (my toddlers were sad as heck), and when I replaced the front doors with open arches so they could enter, they ended up wandering around to the beach next to the home lot to just stand around, like they had nowhere to go. They even spawned off lot when they came home from work.

I couldnt see inside the house, I couldn’t move up or down levels... I fixed it by completely replacing the house after I saved it on my library.

  • Honestly, the game at the moment is almost unplayable espeicially in build mode. EA keep releasing patches, and yet the same bugs remain. I've spent a fortune on this game and many of the expansion packs, I'm not spending any more on it until it works properly. In build mode, saving is ridiculously slow, espeicially considering that I save every few minutes. When I'm saving that often, it should not take three or four minutes to save. Controls are difficult, glitchy, and often extremely laggy. The game frequently freezes and then crashes. Changing the size of items often causes them to vanish completely. Duplicating items is equally glitchy. Walls don't always applie properly. All the time I'm building, I'm fighting with the controls. The game has been out long enough that these issues should have been fixed by now, but it's still an unplayable mess, which gets worse with each expansion released. How about you actually make fixing the game the priority, instead of an constant stream of overpriced add ons?

UPDATE: I have tried all available troubleshooting, and the issue is still going on.

I couldn’t edit my original comment so I had to do another reply.

I am now experiencing another issue where it tells me that the design tool can not be used on any object. These are objects I use and change all the time, there is no reason for this to be happening. When will this actually be addressed and treated as a problem? Can I request a refund on the 6 expansions I bought since I can’t play the game?

I'd say we're just going to have to be patient (even though it sucks and makes you feel a bit second class when compared to PC). This isn't something they had to deal with at all on the pc version because pc version doesn't have a system in place for a controller. They basically created something brand new just for consoles by adding keyboard / mouse support and that's apparently caused a bunch of bugs they didn't have time to test for. I'm not really sure that the sims4 development team is all that big at this point and I'm assuming that the QA for consoles just isn't getting the time it needs or deserves.. At any rate.. it also takes more time for patches to get out to consoles for whatever reason. (probably has something to do with money.. everything always does.)

on Xbone and same here, everything @XxSilverPhoenix mentioned.

@KushKylie  I had the overlaping music for a very long time (so I don't think it's related to the patch), I just switched the music off alltogether, since it is seperate from the music from stereos, instrument it was ok.

  • @vyvexthorne Electronic Arts net worth as of April 26, 2019 is $28.3 billion. You don’t need to defend a multi-billion dollar company. They can do it themselves. They need to QA test their games, and people like you are encouraging bad business practice by enabling these giant companies to act like this and get away with not taking care of their stuff before they release it. Look at the cost of just the DLC in the Sims 4 - $500 dollars. You know thousands of people bought DLC. They get a lot of profit from the Sims just in DLC, not to mention all the other games they have that also push DLC.

The Sims has an entire business unit dedicated to it in EA, so I’m sure their development team isn’t that small. Even if it is, that doesn’t excuse them because there is no reason for this lack of attention. Again, look at their worth and try to tell me why they can’t have a bigger team.

EA needs to earn the respect of their players, because for many people they haven’t gained that respect yet, or have lost it and not earned it back. I also played Sims 4 on PC and had a plethora of game breaking issues (that I reported) that are not exclusive to PS4. Nothing was addressed there either, and it won’t be here on console. They just want our money, and don’t even seem to care about what they are selling anymore. It isn’t like this so the first time EA has neglected a game and it’s issues. Over the years people have hadn’t so many issues with EA is isn’t a new thing. I mean, just look at Star Wars Battlefront controversies. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice... well shame on me.

There is no being patient with them, don’t you understand? I’ve been patient and loyal for years. Stupidly, might I add. They have been given too many chances. I say shame on me because I should stop supporting EA by giving them my money, however they shouldn’t be the ones deceiving their customers. We should expect better from companies like EA, I shouldn’t see issues like these and go “well it’s EA what do I expect.” That’s pathetic, and they need to be held to a higher standard. Looks like I’ll be one of the hundreds, if not thousands of people, who finally decided that buying EA games is a waste of money. Maybe if enough people stop supporting them their ways will change, but even if it doesn’t at least less people will be scammed by EA. I’m still considering pursuing a refund, however I doubt they will actually give it.

@XxSilverPhoenixI agree with you about being patient when it comes to game breaking issues, it's just a no go, I am usually pretty tolerant about minor bugs and glitches (not just in this game) but these latest ones were just too much, made the game unplayable for me.

However, after the April 30 patch my game works as before, I build alot yesterday and didn't run into any of the former problems.

  • @ra7orrat Thanks! We need to be tolerant of issues, but only to a certain degree. Sure small bugs are one thing, annoying but I understand. Other things don’t deserve that much sympathy though. As gamers we really shouldn’t let these huge companies get away with as much as they do.

I noticed less issues in the game too actually, but some things still happen to me. So I guess I should take note of that and list the remaining issues. What happens now is I usually get stuck in the mode where you have to scroll to select buttons, and I can’t move my cursor around on the page as normal. It’s really irritating, but not nearly as bad as the problems I initially brought up at least. A lot of the main problems haven’t been happening, so I hope that it’s actually fixed. I’m glad it’s addressed if so, but there may still be some work to be done. I sound skeptical, but it’s because of the history of issues. I will remain hopeful though, what you said sounds promising.

I actually stopped playing as much because of how badly the game was broken, so I’ll have to give it a try and see how it goes. I haven’t played enough to conclusively say what issues there are or aren’t for me. Before I’d play for hours at a time, so for consistency I’ll have to do around the same. After all this hassle though I am losing any motivation I have to play. I tried all the troubleshooting, and reinstalled my game 4 times... just exhausting.

Build Mode is still really buggy and its been a month, when is the next update to fix this? Getting really frustrated.
