Dear The Sims 4 Support, I’m experiencing lagging issues while playing The Sims 4 due to the amount of mods and custom content (CC) on my laptop. I’d like to move them to my external hard drive to free up space, but I’m not sure how to properly set it up so the game still recognises everything.Could you please advise on the proper way to move my files to the external hard drive without causing any issues with the game’s functionality? Additionally, if there’s any official guidance or steps that I might have missed, I would greatly appreciate your help in pointing me in the right direction. Could you guide me on how to do this? I’d really appreciate any help.
@SavJames29 You can't just move CC, and doing so wouldn't fix your lag issue. The game lags mostly based on how your computer GPU and CPU can handle the amount of packs, mods/CC, Sims in a save, and items on a lot.

Is there a way I can move my game, CC, and mods to my external hard drive, so that when I plug it in, everything is stored on the external drive and not on my laptop? Then, when I unplug the external drive, none of the files will be on my laptop, helping to avoid lag? Thank you.

Yes. For your user data you create a symlink from the EA/TS4 folder on the external drive to the local Documents folder. Are you using a Mac or Windows machine? Instructions differ for each OS.
For the game installation you simply change the location in EA App.But why do you think this will help with lag in your game? As Luth has already told you, it won't. All it will do is free up space on your internal drive, nothing more. You may notice a temporary bump in performance as your computer will have access to more virtual memory using the internal storage you have made available but not overall performance increase. The issue is most likely your computer hardware struggling to run the game.
- 2 months ago@Bluebellflora I am on Mac, the storage eon my mac is on full capacity i want to move my mods/cc onto my external hard drive and get rid of it on my computer to free up space, so when i dont have my external plugged in my mac will run freely and when have the hard drive plugged in i will have my game and cause its 1TB i have more space on my external to download more cc/mods
