Hello
I'm having the exact same issue here. And I am also a Mac user. To be precise, a 2024 Mac mini user. The problem started when I tried to play after the installation of for expansion packs, which were also incredibly hard to buy from the EA app (Expansions installed here: 4 seasons, Life & Death, High School Years and Discover University).
I also don't use mods, and I have already restarted the game and computer, and also tested the game without my saves. The same problem happened (the lower bar is gone, the 1-4 buttons to change the velocity don't work, the above buttons don't work, actually almost no buttons work). And when I tried to go to the neighbourhood, the game just went black, with the sims being there still and showing their eerie bubbles.
I must also add that I couldn't open properly the Copperdale neighbourhood. I am currently reinstalling the game, which should solve the issue. If it doesn't, which I will post here, then the problem is with the expansions and/or the game.
I would appreciate your help, people of the world, I don't want to ask for a refund.
I set up this thread for M4 users experiencing lag/stuttering/fps issues since the last couple of patches and I wonder if what you're experiencing is the same? Same underlying cause but manifesting itself with slightly different problems although at some point you all may experience all of the issues Lagging and stuttering game performance on Macs with M4 chips | EA Forums - 12628907
If you're both experiencing the lag and stuttering, low fps, I may merge these two threads but will wait for your confirmation.

My game was moving slower than normal, but not stuttering or anything really bad, just noticed it was taking longer than normal for things to respond. I hope that helps. I was just surprised it was moving slower, because I had everything unselected from the new pack selector other than base game, so it surprised me. Since playing with the reloaded game without any saves it's been working just as good, if not better than normal. However, I have not touched the pack selector since testing it out. I'm curious to know if alvinius9 used the pack selector?

Hello
What do you mean by the pack selector? I downloaded all the packs (expansions, actually) and encountered several problems with all of them. I will soon make a thread with all these detailed problems. I am currently uninstalling the EA App manually and install it again. I will also try to install the game in the macintosh HD (I used to have it in an external SSD card). I noticed that the Black screen and buttons not working are possibly due to the Life & Death expansion; the problem actually solved when I unselected the expansion from the (I want to say Pack selector?), without even having to uninstall or repair the game. None of the problems have been solved by reparing the game.
I will keep you informed!- WisdomBuilders12 days agoRising Ace
Oh I'm very sorry to hear about that. I just guessed that mine might have been the pack selector, because when I played with it for the first time (all packs turned off but base game) I had my first issue. That stinks that you're having issues with packs. I'm glad the pack selector is doing you some good. I hope it's not that for me either, because I'd like to use it often.
Hope everything works out for you!

Hello, thanks for the reply.
Lagging and stuttering don't seem to be the issue for me: I uninstalled the game and the Base Game works totally fine as before, with a new save. The problems appear when I install the expansions. With 4 Seasons, the game works but the new items don't work at all (they seem red or blue and can't be placed in the world) and with Life & Death, the game stops working and behaves like the problem stated initially on this thread. I experience no lag, no stuttering and no fps issues.
Do you know if there is a thread for mac users that I can go to?
