well, no, i couldn't observe the problem, because all my sims' skin details had been removed by removing my mods. i made a new sim both with mods and without mods, and both times, the skin details stuck. they just don't stick with my already-made sims.

You need to get your already made sims into CAS, in a vanilla game, and add Maxis skin details to see if they stick.

how would i move my sims into a separate save file to test this without losing what i've already done with them?

All you're doing is moving out your Mods folder, launching the game, taking your sims into CAS and trying to apply Maxis details. When you're done testing quit the game and don't save.yes, without any mods, the maxis skin details SEEM to stick, although i can't fully test that without saving the game, exiting, and going back in, which would mean id lose the skin details on that family for good (and pretty much everything else, since i didn't have mods in).
but i'm telling you- the mods are not the problem. i couldn't replicate the issue with mods in, i told you. i made a new sim, added modded-in skin details, saved and left the game, and when i came back, the new sim still had his non-maxis skin details. i tried taking out my mod folders one by one, and there wasn't any change. and if i take all my mods out, i can't tell if the problem is fixed, because there aren't any skin details left to see!
