Bought a new gaming PC: screen flickers and turns white or black

I just bought a new gaming PC and installed The Sims 4.  When I try to play the game, the screen flickers and turns white.  I have to use Ctrl Alt Del to force close the game.  I turned on Vertical Sync and the screen still flickers.

  • ilvny  Thanks for the dxdiag.  It doesn't list any BlueScreens, but that could be because they've been crowded out by newer errors.  The new errors are all LiveKernelEvents: serious errors of Windows or kernel mode drivers (as in, critical system drivers) that are not quite serious enough for Windows to force a shutdown but could still compromise overall function.

One type of error listed is a crash of the USB 3 driver, so please disconnect all USB devices for now other than the keyboard and mouse.  These errors often clear up when the user disconnects the devices and restarts the computer, but given the other errors, it would be best to keep everything disconnected for now and only test your other peripherals once the system is stable again.

The second type of error has to do with a miniport driver, but it's not clear which one.

The third type of error is a crash of the graphics driver, so the typical suggestion would be to clean-uninstall and reinstall the driver, as described here:

However, I'm not sure it's worth trying to address these problems one at a time given the three types of errors AND the BSODs that the dxdiag doesn't list.  Since this computer is new to you, I would suggest instead that it would be best to do a clean install of Windows and manually install the system drivers.  You can download the graphics driver from Nvidia, plus the chipset drivers and other software from the support site for your motherboard, store these on a USB, install Windows with your computer offline, and manually install these drivers (chipset, graphics, other software, in that order) before going online again.

If you don't want to do this, that's understandable, and please try the suggestions above, then post a new dxdiag after you get another BSOD.  But I think it might be faster to start from scratch.
