Buying an external hard drive to play exspansion packs?

Hello I'm very late to this thread but I was wondering honestly I just want to plays sims 4 with the island living pack I miss mermaids my current PC is a Acer Aspire 5 laptop it has 4GB,DDR4,128GB I need more space to play that particular expansion I did a wipe on my PC a while ago and deleted everything possible but I'm still  not able to even play that pack alone even if I have nothing installed except the base game its self  I can play the sims with only limited expansion packs and only a few stuff packs in general so I'm wondering if I buy an external hard drive would that make that expansion pack playable or do I need to buy a new PC altogether??

  • @elejaydubu If you installed your game on an external drive device your limitation will be the speed of the drive and the USB transfer rate. The spec I looked at showed a USB 3.2 Gen 1 which maxes at 10 Gbps data transfer. This speed is impacted by the speed of your external hard drive. A SSD is preferable to a spinning disk as they have a much faster seek rate.

It will still have a bit of lag due to the external data and the 4GB memory on the PC.

If finances allow, a new PC might prove the better option.

  • @elejaydubu  If you want an opinion on your current laptop, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

    https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/pc/how-to-gather-dxdiag-information/

This will give me a hardware overview, list free and total storage, and show me what software errors (if any) you might want to address.  Please also let me know whether this dxdiag was run with Sims 4 already installed.

The question here is whether storage is the only major problem or there's another serious limitation on how well this laptop can run Sims 4.  It doesn't have much RAM, but 4 GB is (barely) enough to work with if you're only installing the base game and Island Living and you're not running anything else at the same time.
