    I just realized my sim had the hidden trait "trait_Scarecrow"... I added the "trait_Scarecrow" via cheats, but I don't recall why. The scarecrow trait basically makes you like the scarecrow from the Seasons expansion, so I couldn't join social events.

Update: I tried to start a gathering with another sim, and it worked. I had my bugged sim in the club with me, but the bugged sim didn't come over to join the gathering...
