Constant Crashing

I would love it if the comments related to the constant crashing could stop insinuating device and user error. there is an issue with the game, either from the updates or the rush fix after the pregnancy mishap.

My game, played on windows with AND without mods has been crashing constantly during building and gameplay. The issue persists after trying alternate lots and saves, uninstalling/repairing/deleting saves, testing of different older drives, clearing cache, and allllll of the other suggestions to fix the issue that were sent through comments to other users. I would simply like to know if the issue is being addressed at this time.

  • KhmeraMia  No one is insinuating a device or driver error.  I'm stating it explicitly.  These crashes, not all of them but certainly a majority, are specific enough to point to a particular cause, for example the graphics driver crashes, or the game crashes due to a fault with some other resource.  The obvious first step is to address that problem, not to blame Sims 4.  I'm not saying the game is never responsible for the crashing, only that it's not the only culprit.

Further, when trying to diagnose a bug, or home in on the exact trigger, it's not only helpful but absolutely necessary to eliminate system issues.  Not doing so adds noise to the data and can obscure the answer entirely.

At any rate, your crashes don't point to an outside cause, not that there isn't one but at least there isn't any evidence of one.  The errors say Sims 4 crashed because it crashed, because it committed an access violation, which itself is too generic to be of any use.

So, if this is a bug, or might be, more information about the context would be helpful.  Please let me know which lots you've been playing on when the game crashed, and any other lots you loaded during those sessions.  Or rather, let me know if there's any pattern to the lots involved.  I've seen a number of reports of crashing tied to a few lots in Innisgreen.  And yes, I realize you've tried different lots, but you could have happened to choose multiple broken lots.

Please also let me know if there's anything else these crashes have in common, for example maybe you've been playing the same sim that happens to be a fairy, or the same activity is happening during each crash.

I'd like to see a lastcrash as well, one generated without mods or custom content.  I may not be able to do anything with them, but EA QA might want them.  You can copy and paste the text into a reply here, or (possibly) attach it as a text file, or upload it to a third-party file sharing site and link it here.  If your post disappears, or I don't reply, please bump it—this site sometimes flags posts with this kind of text as spam, and the posts reappear later, but by then they're pushed down the forum and can be missed.

I have 4 different saves and have simply tried to search the inventory in build mode; prior to noticing this error I was actually actively building, but upon noticing I stopped even attempting to build and noticed the issue will occur immediately if I try to search build mode or a residential inventory, or during live play tried to access cas (using a closet or dresser, without using cheats) and it will pause, the music stops and the game closes. I've tried this with 4 families (with both game original and created families), and I have attempted build mode on 15 different lots between the 4 saves, residential, community, and vacation rentals.  The only common issue is that even without mods I can not only NOT search for items, but the runtime duration prior to crashes no matter what I attempt to do, even if it's simply switching lots, does not exceed 15 minutes.

same here. my game does not show a window after crashing, it just crashes and that's it. no specific triggers in-game. ever since the most recent dlc and update were released my game is unplayable. and I spent money on it to enjoy before school starts back up. I'd also love to know if there is anyone looking into this because it is a consistent issue and it's driving me crazy!!

  • KhmeraMia  That is strange, and I don't know of any other current threads on this site with crashing that's so generalized and doesn't have a likely system error associated with it.  So if this is a bug, it's not a common one—everything currently reported is at least somewhat more specific.  One question I do have though is whether you're playing with the MoveObjects cheat on.  I did see a report that the cheat is causing crashing in relation to certain Gallery downloads, and although their description doesn't match yours, it made me wonder.

If that's not the issue, please try playing in a clean boot:

The one service to leave enabled is the EABackgroundService, which the EA App needs in order to run.  Disable the rest as described.

When you reboot your computer, go through the Task Manager's background processes list shutting down any service that doesn't absolutely need to be running, for example anything from MSI Afterburner to RGB software might still be enabled.  If you accidentally kill a critical process and it doesn't restart on its own, just reboot your computer again.

Don't open anything other than Sims 4 and the EA App while testing, not even a browser window.

If this helps, you can selectively reenable services until you find the culprit, then either leave that disabled or (if it belongs to an app you want to keep using) let me know what it is so we can try to fix the underlying issue.

Please don't use any content from the Gallery and avoid the new world entirely for this test.

  • choccymilkie  As a test, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you've moved but temporarily unread by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just start a new save and see how it runs.

If you get another crash, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.
