Did EA stop adding new graphics cards to GraphicsCards.sgr?

Hi,

I upgraded my graphics card to RTX 5060 Ti 16GB. When I launched Sims 4, I've got the message about unsupported graphics card. I said "OK, I guess this card is too new to be recognised by the game yet" and decided to add it. So, I located GraphicsCards.sgr, copied it to ConfigOverride folder in My Documents and opened it. What I've found inside was shocking. The latest Nvidia graphics card added was RTX 4080 and latest AMD card added was RX 6700 XT. RTX 4080, the latest card on this list, was released in November 2022, so, over two and a half year ago. And since then, no new card was added? Seriously EA? To make sure I don't have some older version of the file on my PC, I went through repairing the game files in EA App. But still, no change. Obviously, EA stopped adding new cards and I have to wonder why.

Anyway, I added my card to the list and now everything works without issues. But still, EA should be adding new cards to the list with updates, as this is causing troubles for less tech savvy Simmers, who, after graphics card, or computer update will get this message and may even panic that there is something wrong with their new configuration. And that's not good.

  • Hi!! I actually just encountered the same thing, I upgraded to the 5070Ti and the game didn’t recognize it, how can I update the file to include mine? 🥲 Also, does that make a difference? I’m just wondering if the game really uses the GPU to all its potential after manually adding that.

I don't think the game will really better utilise your card if it is recognised. However, you should get the right resolutions etc.

To recognise your card, first locate Sims 4 folder in Documents\Electric Arts

There, find file named Config.log and open it in Notepad or something similar. There, locate Graphics Device Info section which should have info about your Graphics card in this format:

    === Graphics device info ===
    Number:          0
Name (driver):   NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti
Name (database): NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti [Found: 1, Supported: 1]
    Vendor:          NVIDIA
    Chipset:         Vendor: 10de, Device: 2d04, Board: 205e1771, Chipset: 00a1

Your will, have 5070 Ti instead of 5060 Ti, different device number (both of these will be important in future, so, keep this window open) and most likely also "Found: 0 and Supported: 0

Then, locate your installed Sims 4 files. The easiest way to do that is in EA App go to Sims 4 tab in Installed games, then click on Manage, Properties and then you should see Open folder. That will open your installed files. If you installed through Steam, go to Sims 4 tab in Steam library, right-click the game, select "Properties," then "Local Files," and finally "Browse".

Here, locate Game\Bin folders and then GraphicsCards.sgr file. Do not edit the file here. Copy it in your Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\ConfigOverride folder. If you don't see ConfigOverride folder, create it.

Here, in ConfigOverride, you can edit GraphicsCards.sgr file. Open it in Notepad, or whatever you are using. There, press Ctrl+F and search "NVIDIA". Under that NVIDIA line, create new line like this:

        card    0x2d04  "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti"   $cardLevelUber  $resolutionHigh

However, replace the 2d04 with whatever the Config.log file is showing under Device and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti with whatever the Config.log file is showing under name (most likely NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti). Then, save the GraphicsCards.sgr file and that's it.

    Hope this helped you.

  • thank you sm for this!!! i’ll do it immediately when i get home! you’re an angel!!!

  • peno11  EA has always added GPUs in batches, so it's no surprise when there's a delay.  But this does seem like an unusually long delay.  I don't know why, except that maybe there's going to be an overhaul of the system in general and there's not much point in spending resources on keeping the file up to date in the interim.  That's just speculation though.
