external hard drive issues

Hello! I have not been able to find a solid answer on the internet to this problem, so I wanted to reach out to you all. I love playing the Sims but it sure eats up space. Therefore I have uninstalled it completely (I think) and I am trying to reinstall it to an external hard drive. I have changed the Origin settings so that everything downloads/ installs to the external hard drive. This is as far as I have gotten, because every time I get to the downloading part I get various errors saying things like "Origin is not able to download to D:\Origin\The Sims 4\Data\Client\ClientDeltaBuild2.package" or some variation of the .package file. It then below says to check that the location is available. As far as I can tell, the folder is available and open and has other .package files in it. I am pretty baffled on what to do... It seems like a permissions error, but I am wondering if someone has any experience with a similar issue. Thanks!

  • @chlojs44  Try clearing Origin's cache:

    and restarting your computer.

Given that you've just started reinstalling, another option would be to install on your internal drive and then move Origin to the external.  (It's more of a headache than just installing directly onto the external but less than working around a persistent error.)  Within your Origin game library, you can right-click on the Sims 4 icon and select Move Game, that is once it's installed.

By the way, if you've installed Origin on the external as well, specifically within the Origin folder, it's best to create a new folder for Sims 4, for example D:\Origin Games or D:\Sims.

  • I could be wrong about this, but does it help if you run Origin as administrator?

  • I did try this and it did not make a difference unfortunately.

So, I can’t install on my internal drive just because I don’t have enough space for it all.

also out of curiosity is the “move game” feature different than just moving the folders/ is there a manual way to move the games over?

    thanks!

@chlojs44  You could in theory install in one location, then copy the files to a different location.  In that case, you'd use the Origin option to "Locate Game," and Origin would create or restore the various extra files that the game requires.  It's not enough to merely move the game's program files; the extra data (e.g. registry entries) needs to match as well.

Anyway, please create a new folder on D and try installing Sims 4 into that.

Is it okay if I have origin on my internal hard drive? That is where it is now. Or should it be installed on the external?

@chlojs44  It's better to have Origin on the internal drive.  It takes up very little space, and Origin can be fussy when on an external.

If the game still doesn't install properly, please let me know how much free storage your internal drive has.  It may also help to install the base game only at first, then download the packs afterwards.
