Folders are different since installing game on external hard drive

I have just uninstalled my game from my laptop to an external hard drive. The game launches completely fine and I have enabled mods. The issue I am having is that the folders are unrecognisable since installing the game on an external hard drive. There are loads more folders to start with and they are all called things like 'GP' or 'EP' or 'SP' followed by numbers. There is also a data, delta, and _Installer folder. I have created a new save on the new game to see if this made a 'saves' folder appear (as I wanted to move my old saves to the external hard drive) but there isn't one. I tried to just add the old folder, but this didn't achieve anything. The same has happened with with my mods folder, one hasn't appeared so I'm not able to add any mods or custom content to my game. Do you know why this has happened/what I can do to fix this? I have attached a screenshot of what the folders look like if this helps! Thank you :)

  • babyegg1  Your screenshot shows the game's program files, as in, what the EA App installs.  Your saves, mods, etc. go in the user folder, which is always in Documents > Electronic Arts.  In case it helps, here's how to find it:

    https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2018/07/how-to-find-your-user-folder/

You can leave the folder where it is, but if you'd prefer to move it to the external, here's how:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2020/02/moving-windows-documents-folder-to-external-drive-via-symbolic-link.html

The folder can be anywhere on the exteral except for in the same location as the program files.  Combining these folders can and will break things.

If you need help with the process, please list the location where you'd like the user folder as well as the location the game is reading (first link).

Hey puzzlezaddict! Thank you so much for this - I don’t know why I didn’t realise it saved to a different place! I think I just assumed that when I changed the EA app to download into the external hard drive, all the files were going to be included. I panicked when I saw the files I didn’t recognise!

I have managed to locate the user folder thanks to that guide and won’t need to transfer it over to an external hard drive as it is far smaller than the actual game file so I’ve freed up over 55GB so my issue has been sorted!

Thanks for all your help, you’re a legend :)
