Game crashing when trying to open household with "for rent" property

Tonight I updated my game and got the recent expansion pack and had several occasions where my game randomly crashed. This wasn't too bad, but there is one instance where I cannot open a family household that has a "for rent" property on the lot.

I tried disabling all my mods and it still happened, I was able to separate and move all but 1 of the family members into a new household on a new lot and open the family, but still not open the household on the original lot that also has a for rent property on the lot. I did also did a full repair, etc and tried another family that also had a for rent property - the same issue happened. This seems to be linked to the recent game updates and new expansion.

  • chelceec  If you move the entire household elsewhere, can you play them?  I'm not sure from your description whether the problem is the sim you left behind or the lot (or its status as a residential rental).  It's more likely to be the rental than the sim, but still, it's worth testing.

Please also let me know whether you can open the affected lots in Build mode.  And please test with your Mods folder removed, as disabling mods isn't always as thorough as the setting name implies.

Residential rentals are somewhat broken, but they're not universally unusable, so something else is going on.  It could be related to your mods (they can continue to affect a save even after being removed), or a bug affected both households, or something else, which is why some testing is in order.

Hello, yes I was able to play the household if I moved the entire household to a different lot. I was also able to open the affected lot in build mode and did these tests without my mods file (it was removed)

When I moved the household out and it allowed me to play them in a different lot, they were still owners of both of the residential rentals in the original plot (there was two houses and the family owned both but lived in one) The game just keeps crashing if I try to play the household in their original home.

I also tried selling the residential properties when I moved the household onto a different lot and changing the original property back to "residential" and it allowed me to play the family when I moved them back onto the lot - but the game seems to think they are now renting the lot and get bills for rent and a landlord npc showing up.... The issue does appear to be with the for rent gameplay and it only happened after the recent updates.

  • chelceec  I would suggest changing the lot to residential, saving the house to your library, bulldozing the lot, changing it to some kind of commercial property, then saving/quitting/reloading before trying to place the build again and move the household back in.  Sometimes these things get stuck for no apparent reason, but a zoning change, so to speak, may clear that up.
