Since upgrading to Windows 10, Sims 4 won't even launch. I get:
"Unable to start:
The Sims 4 game is already running."

This is from a fresh boot, so it definitely is not running.

Please, try the following steps:
- Find the "Electronic Arts" folder inside "Documents".
- Right click on it and choose "Properties".
- In the new window, select the "Sharing", and a few lines below, press the "Sharing..." button.
- It will open a new window. There's a drop-down list. Choose "Everyone" and then Add.
- Everyone will be added to the list below. Choose "Read/write" in the permission level for everyone.
- Save the changes.
- Open Origin, log in, and try to launch your game again.
Let me know if that works for you.
- Important if you upgrade to an newer operating system, make sure and delete afterwards the "windows old" folder. The conflict often arises through old files from the previous operating system.

Move Options.ini on your desktop and start the game again.
c://Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4
This file can be recreated, including with the new operating system.
Delete all Sims cache files
Be sure that all mods are still compatible with the new operating system!

Liz I was having the same problem of the game saying that it was already running when I launched the game. What you suggested fixed the problem right away. Many Kudos to you. This also fixed a problem with another game I have. but different file of course.

I tried this solution and nothing.
I'm not even getting an error message when I try to open the game; it just runs a black screen for a few second, flickers a bit and then returns to my desktop. I've loaded the 64...dil, thing and the C++ thing, I've reinstalled Origin. Once I've repeated all of those installs and then rebooted it will open perfectly well, but that's a lot of time spent reinstalling things that shouldn't need to be reinstalled.
This has been going on since I downloaded the game five days ago. Please help!

Did it run ok before ? Did you try repairing the game through Origin ?

I recently upgraded my computer to windows 10 and when I try to start TS4 the screen turns black, except for the mouse pointer. I can see that the mouse changes to a pointing hand when i move it to where the menu should be (if the screen had not been black), so it seems that the only thing that isn't working is the image on the screen in some way.
I've tried many suggested solutions like restarting my computer, reinstalling the game, running the game as an admin, running it in windows 7 compability mode etc, but nothing has worked so far.

I really prefer to play with CC/mods because I think it really enhances my game. But recently I just switched my computer to Windows 10 (not sure if that has anything to do with it) and now when I try to play with CC literally nothing happens. I will double click the Sims 4 icon on my desktop and my cursor will have the loading symbol for a couple seconds and then nothing will happen, but when I remove all CC/mods it starts up just fine. I've tried a number of things and I still can't get it to work with CC. Can anyone help out with this?

I cant do step 2 cause I don't have it
What do you don't have ? A folder in docs ? The game needs to be started once to have that.
What issue do you have in detail ?
I, too, received the "Cant run Sims 4 with the video card" error. I have a very capable video card (Radeon RX 480), and through my own digging, discovered that this issue is commonly caused by Windows 10 complications. I spent hours Google-researching and even spent time with EA/Origin technical support trying to figure out the issue--NOTHING worked.
- I updated my video card driver, MOBO, processor, and chipset drivers. No success.
- I disabled Origin In Game on both the Sims 4 and the Origin app itself. No success.
- I disabled all startup programs (at the technical support rep's request). No success.
- I added sharing options in the permissions settings of Sims 4 to "Everyone: Read/Write". NO success.
- I already had the latest version of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio files found in the vc/vc2013 folder (tech support said it was in _Installer folder, but it wasn't for me. I suspect that has something to do with Windows 10). I did have the option to repair the two files, but doing so was unsuccessful.
- I tried running Sims 4 in either 32 bit or 64 bit. No success.
- I tried running Sims 4 in Compatibility Mode with Windows 8 or Windows 7. No success.
- I ran a system scan ordered through my Command Prompt. NO files were found to be damaged or corrupted, thus nothing was in need of repair (as I expected since my computer system is a new mid-grade custom gaming build). No success.
I gave up until I randomly decided to search one more time several hours later. I came across this VERY helpful page with a list of several tips for us Windows 10 simmers. The specific issue that worked for me was this:Solution 8 – Change the command-line arguments
- Start the Origin.
- Go to My Games section and right click Sims 4.
- Choose Properties.
- Find the Command-Line Arguments textbox and enter this:
- -w und
- Click Apply to save your changes.
I don't know quite enough to know what this does or why this particular fix was successful; but perhaps it has something to do with with the fact that it's running in windowed mode instead of full screen. I suspect there is some sort of issues with windowed/fullscreen caused by issues with the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio files in the Sims 4 folders on Windows 10, since they seem to me like they're damaged (they had a "Repair" option that never went away no matter how many times I selected it and restarted).
Whatever the case, it worked for me! I hope this information helps someone else. Happy gaming.
