Game crashes during gameplay, since latest update

Hi,

I've been playing the Sims for years, no mods or cc, completely trouble free, until the latest update :(

It is now crashing during gameplay - no error message, just freezes and crashes out to my desktop. It happens anytime from a few minutes of starting up to 30 minutes, it's completely random, there doesn't appear to be anything which is triggering it, which is really frustrating

I have tried a few fixes, such as repairing the game via the EA app, changing the graphics settings, turning on laptop mode, turning on directx9, deleting the cache files, deleting the entire EA folder (and allowing it to be re-built on game start up) updating graphics driver, turning off 'extreme performance' mode on my laptop, updating the laptop - now I'm out of ideas

Please can someone advise what I can try next - I have attached the dxdiag from just after the last crash

Thank you

    https://www.amd.com/en/support/downloads/drivers.html/graphics/radeon-rx/radeon-rx-6000-series/amd-radeon-rx-6600m.html

Run the installer as an admin: right-click the download and select "Run as administrator."  Restart the laptop after installing and before trying to play.

If that alone doesn't help, please unplug your USB hub and try running the game only on the laptop screen.  Sims 4 doesn't always get along with these hubs, and the driver for yours is from 2020.  Even if you want to keep using it in general, it would be helpful to know whether this is the problem.

  • Thank you v much for this, I have updated the graphics driver (and the USB hub driver just in case), made sure to restart after installation, and it still crashes

I did also unplug the USB hub, and restarted, and played just on the laptop, but again still crashing :(

Here is the latest dxdiag just in case it is helpful again

Unfortunately your "fix" is not helping any of us but thank you for your time❤️

  • keira87993  Sorry for the late reply; I've been away from the forums for a while.  Your new dxdiag only has one new Sims 4 error, and it's too generic to be of any help on its own.  So some experimenting may be in order.  First, please try playing with your computer offline.  You can sign into the EA App and put it in offline mode, then disable wifi and/or disconnect the ethernet cable before pressing Play.  I'm not saying this is the way you have to play in general; it's just a good diagnostic test.

VictoriasUnknown  Crashing-related fixes are individual to the user.  Hopefully you didn't try to install a driver meant for a different computer, because it could easily be incompatible with your hardware, and of course you might not have a graphics driver-related issue at all.

Yeah, I didn't do that, that would be a whole mess... i hope this is helpful: my mother and I have noticed that when we use debug items from enchanted by nature it crashes; another time we noticed was when a npc fairy knocks on our current households door

was finally able to make a crash report:

  • VictoriasUnknown  Those details are worth adding to the longer thread here:

    Crashing | EA Forums - 13467034

along with a copy of your save(s) and crash logs.  It looks like EA is investigating crashing that's specific to certain saves, or details within the save.  That's definitely not the only current source of crashes but at least is common enough at the moment.

    No worries :)

I tried playing offline, unplugged the cable and turned WiFi off, unfortunately its still crashing

  • keira87993  There may be an in-game issue causing at least some of the crashing, as EA has asked for saves and lastcrash files in this longer thread:

    Crashing | EA Forums - 13467034

I don't know whether this is what you're seeing, but if a new save is fine (at least for a while), that makes it more likely.  So please test a new save, if you haven't already—I know you let the game generate a new user folder, but I'm not sure whether you moved over your old saves after that.  And in the new save, don't use any content from the Gallery or your own library; just create new sims and place them on a blank or default EA-made lot.

If this doesn't or didn't help, try playing in a clean boot (not a clean Windows install, just a way to disable background services).  Here's how:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd

The one service to leave enabled is the EABackgroundService, which the EA App needs in order to run.  Disable the rest as described.

When you reboot your computer, go through the Task Manager's background processes list shutting down any service that doesn't absolutely need to be running, for example anything from MSI Afterburner to RGB software might still be enabled.  If you accidentally kill a critical process and it doesn't restart on its own, just reboot your computer again.

Don't open anything other than Sims 4 and the EA App while testing, not even a browser window.

If this helps, you can selectively reenable services until you find the culprit, then either leave that disabled or (if it belongs to an app you want to keep using) let me know what it is so we can try to fix the underlying issue.
