Live Controls error

Everytime I try and play the sims, I've been having issues. CAS works just fine, and I can load into a save if I want. but I can't play without the sims 4 controls layering over one another. I've deleted all my mods and I've deleted and redownloaded the sims twice, along with repairing it four times. I'm not sure what to do and any type of search I try and do, (google, youtube, reddit, etc) nothing comes up with what problems I'm having. If anyone could help, that would be awesome. If not, I'll just see if the new update will fix it.

  • @xime3i3w4c93  As a test, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just start a new save and see whether the problem is still present.

If that doesn't help, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

so when I moved it out, the error still continued. I loaded up a clean save without any mods or any alterations to it. I did the Dxdiag, however I didn't have a 64 option bit. I think I might've found the issue with my, "graphics device driver error code 31" but I'm not sure. (Edit:I realized I needed to update my laptop, so that could've been a problem, but I'll wait to hear what you have to say.)

I don't know what happened, but my game is working perfectly now! thank you so so so much. your literally a god send to me. I've been trying to get the sims to work since Love struck came out and I finally got to play it without any issues. Would you say it's okay for me to playtest some mods or should I play vanilla for awhile just to see how it is?

@xime3i3w4c93  The "graphics device driver error code 31" error means that the proper graphics driver couldn't be loaded.  That can happen when the driver is corrupt or missing.  In any event, a system update could fix that—perhaps all your laptop needed was an updated or reinstalled driver.  So I'm not surprised that things suddenly started working again.

I wouldn't worry about this issue happening again, although if you see the same symptoms, that would be the first suspect.  This kind of problem is often fixed permanently with a fresh install of the driver.

As for adding back mods, I would test the game thoroughly first, but not necessarily for a long time.  If you try everything you normally do—building, standard live mode, traveling, uploading to the Gallery, maybe some new Lovestruck-related features, and definitely loading the new world—and you don't notice any issues, go ahead and add a few mods.  (You don't need to try every single tiny detail, just the major game components.)  Then if you notice a problem, you'll know the cause is one of your mods and not a game issue you didn't notice earlier.
