Looking for a Convertible Laptop for Sims 4

Hello Simmers,

my old beloved laptop is unfortunately about to die, so in view of black friday sales I'm looking for recommendations on a decent laptop to play Sims 4.

My main must-haves are:

- convertible (i.e. should fold completely 360 degrees)

- at least 512 GB SSD (1TB if possible)

- plays Sims 4 on at least similar specs than I can now

Nice to have would be at least 14 inch display.

For reference, my old laptop is this: Lenovo YOGA 700-14ISK 80QD00A9GE 14" Full-HD IPS, Core i5-6200U, 8GB, 256GB SSD, GeForce 940M 2GB, Win10.

And I play on the following specs:

- Resolution: 1920x1080

- Sims: Very High

- Objects: High

- Lighting: Medium

- Reflections: Medum

- Visual Effects: Medium

- Edge Smoothing: High

- 3D Acene: Medium

- View Distance: High

I don't have a fixed budget but I also don't want to unnecessarily overspend. I don't play anything but TS4 and even that not as often as I used to. I had my eyes on the ASUS ROG Flow X13 GV302XV-MU001W, convertible, with 13.4-inch display touchscreen, AMD Ryzen™ 9.7940HS processor, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ 4060, Windows 11 Home (64 bit). But it's currently almost 2.000€ without sale and I suspect a massive overkill for my needs and also has a smaller screen than I currently have.

Any recommendations on specific models and/or tips what to watch for would be appreciated! From my own research it seems that finding a convertible laptop with dedicated GPU is the biggest issue. I understand a dedicated GPU is (or used to be) highly recommended for the Sims, but maybe onboard graphics are better these days and I don't really need a dedicated one any more?

Thank you! 🙂

Best,

Kat

  • @shaki_lady Hi! It's not the most advanced, but the Laptop I use has the highest resolution I've seen (besides a PC Console) when it comes to the Sims. The HP Pavilion 360x Touchscreen 14in is what I have, and it's amazing (as in fast and high rez) when it comes to gameplay, but you'll have to go more expensive if you want 1TB. I keep all my mods and cc's on a seperate drive to make more room. And I'm not sure about the GPU, but I have yet to need one.
I hope you find one soon!
  • @shaki_lady  Dedicated graphics cards are always faster than integrated chips, and therefore better for gaming, but Sims 4 does just fine on a high-end iGPU these days.  An RTX 4060 is definitely overkill, and I wouldn't ever suggest someone spend 2,000€ or the equivalent just to play Sims 4.

The best integrated graphics chips available now can run Sims 4 on high-ultra settings even with all current packs installed, at least if you're playing at a 1920x1080 resolution.  (You might need to turn the settings down a bit at a higher resolution, or else play at 1080p, but it's always fine to experiment.)  The iGPU in a given laptop is determined by the CPU in that a given processor will (almost) always have the same iGPU.  This is especially relevant because many spec sheets don't list the exact model graphics chip, just the family; you can't assume that "Radeon Graphics" means the same thing every time.

Anyway, you'd ideally want one of these CPUs:

    Intel Core Ultra 5 135H; Ultra 7 155H, 165H; ultra 9 185H

    AMD Ryzen 7 7840U/S/HS, 8840U/HS, 8845HS; Ryzen 9 x94xHS

These are a bit slower but still great:

    Intel Core Ultra 5 125H

    Ryzen 7 6800U/H/HS, 7735U/H/HS

    Ryzen 5 7640U/HS, 8640U/HS

If you find a convertible laptop with any of these processors and at least 16 GB RAM, you should get what you're looking for.  Since I don't know what country you're in, I can't offer specific recommendations, but here's an example that also happens to fit your other requirements:

As you can see, it's not anywhere near 2,000€ either.  I'm not suggesting this is the best laptop for you personally, only that what you want is out there and reasonably-priced.

Feel free to ask more questions in general or for help finding what you want in your country or your preferred stores.

Thank you so much, I had already looked at a couple of HP360x models actually, so it's good to know yours works so well for the Sims! 🙂

Could you let me know your exact model name? There seem to be quite a few 14inch models with different specifications so I'd like to compare in more detail. They're all having names in the format "14-ek2750ng". Thanks in advance!

Wow, thanks so much for all the details on good CPUs, this will be super helpful to conduct further research! 😊 I also found that Dell you linked on a German website and it looks promising. I'll do some further research over the next couple of days and may get back with the models I've shortlisted. Thank you!!

Edit: What do you think of this Lenovo? https://www.lenovo.com/de/de/p/laptops/yoga/yoga-2-in-1-series/lenovo-yoga-7i-2-in-1-gen-9-14-inch-intel/83djcto1wwde3

It's more expensive than the Dell you have linked but it does come with 32GB RAM instead of 16GB.

@shaki_lady  I think it's a great laptop if you're willing to pay that much.  It has a significantly better screen: much brighter, much prettier, higher resolution, higher refresh rate.  In terms of graphics performance, it's on par with the Dell, but that's not the only thing that matters.

The extra RAM will make no difference to Sims 4 now or ever.  And Windows can manage pretty much any "normal" use case with 16 GB.  Still, it's not a bad thing to have extra memory, and you might be happy to have it down the line if you're a heavy multitasker.  I wouldn't ever suggest paying more than a nominal amount extra for it, but if it's bundled with other features you'd like, why not.

I do want to mention that you might need to turn down the graphics settings OR the in-game resolution to get the performance you'd want.  "Downgrading" to 1920x1200 or so would still give you a great-looking game, plus you'd have the extra sharpness for everything else.  Just don't expect the graphics chip to manage all those extra pixels without some drop in framerates.  It's fine to experiment though—try different settings and see what you like, and the laptop will be fine.
