my game is "unable to start" regardless of what cc is installed

hi, my game has been working fine until my laptop did some general updates? Yesterday it showed me an error pop-up about "game data missing or being damaged" and that I should delete my mods. So I copied them out of my Sims4 folder, repaired the game, put them back in and reloaded the game - it worked. My game worked normally all day. Until today - it showed the same error screen. I tried the same copy-reload thing but this time it didnt work. Which made me think it could be a corrupt cc file (even tho I didnt download any new cc between it working normally and yesterday) - I took all my cc out of the Sims4 folder and tried downloading it fresh. I downloaded 1 thing at a time and tried opening the game in between folders but no cc works - i tried different stuff, different download websites (patreon, curseforge, tumblr) and different creators. Nothing worked?

what could be the issue then? it can't possibly be that every single creators cc is all of a sudden corrupted ? I tried resetting the game - making a backup, restarting the game - still doesnt work.

Is it because of the general updates my laptop did? (it did mess up some files idk how, i'm bad with tech, but some are getting "format not supported or data damaged" errors) But then that shouldn't effect the cc if i installed in fresh? or is it the data-type? I am getting "invalid access number" when copying some of the cc files - but it doesnt happen with all of them?? aren't they the same type? f.e. i install a whole cc pack in a zip - and when extracting it some do normally and some get the invalid-error ?

what can i do? 😭

  • anotherbea  Yes, a new Sims 4 folder would have been sufficient at first... but I wasn't sure whether you had inadvertantly reintroduced the problem after creating the new folder, for example by transferring the entire old Mods folder or the old Resource.cfg inside.

Anyway, yes, a VPN can mess things up in a variety of ways, some of which aren't obvious.  I hadn't heard of it causing this particular error, but it's not completely out of the realm of possibility.

I had the game make a whole new sims 4 folder thing (without mods) so that should've done the mods folder too...?

But I think I found the issue? Could a VPN possibly mess things up? Because when I pause it and connect to my home server the game works fine... Just when I forget turning the VPN off it won't load ... ? That's what I observed so far... I just didn't think that could be the reason so I didn't look into it too much 😖

  • anotherbea  Please remove the Mods folder and let the game generate a new one, even if you have already.  Download one mod or cc item, something confirmed compatible with yesterday's patch (1.114), and see whether it works.

If you get the same error, try this again, except use a different browser to download the mod or cc item.
