Opinion on new laptop for gaming..

I'm considering buying a new laptop for gaming. The one I have is starting to get a bit sluggish and tired. It's six years old and run every day, all day.

I'm retired, so I don't have unlimited funds, but I have liked my ASUS TUF (ASUS Gaming FX505GD-BQ100T / 15.6" / FHD / i5-8300H / 8GB / 256GB SSD M.2 / GTX 1050), so I'm tempted to get another one, but with better specs.

Opinions on this one please. (ASUS TUF Gaming F15 FX506LH / 15.6" / FHD / 144Hz / i5-10300H / 16GB / 512GB / GTX 1650)  👇

  • @BylineBelife  The laptop you've been considering is fine, it should probably run Sims 4 on ultra graphics settings if you don't have any custom content, but you can do better.  For example, this one has twice the storage and a much faster processor and graphics card:

It does only have 8 GB RAM, but that's a simple and relatively cheap upgrade, as opposed to the CPU and GPU which cannot be upgraded at all.  This is also a high-quality laptop overall.

This one is slightly more expensive and comes with 16 GB RAM, the same GPU and storage, and a similar CPU.  The quality is fine but not as good as the Victus.

If you do want to stick with Asus, the one you're looking at might be the best option right now, but then I only checked prices on three Swedish sites (Komplett, inet, and Elgiganten), not really knowing the market well.  Feel free to link other sites if you'd like me to look further.

I will say that between a GTX 1650 and RTX 2050, the 1650 is actually the better option.  While the 2050 wins in most synthetic benchmarks, the 1650 performs better in-game, on average, at least until you get to a 4k resolution.  Since you'd likely be playing at 1920x1080, the resolution of pretty much all gaming laptops in this price range, the performance at 4k is irrelevant.

If you'd like me to broaden the search, let me know.  If you're going to wait until Black Friday or another sales event, feel free to post back at that time.

Ups sorry for that mistake. It comes with a Nordic keyboard covering Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. You very rarely get keyboards that are only in one of these languages. Especially on laptops. (Lokalisering Nordisk). For Sweden you need to add about 30% to the price which still makes it a way better option than the one in your picture. BTW. a link is better than a picture as I can get additional info there.

@jpkarlsen  This one only have a Danish keyboard, and lack all Swedish letters ÅåÄäÖö, plus the layout is all wrong. Also, you need to take into account the exchange rate. The Swedish krona is at its lowest right now, while the Danish krona is soaring. But thank you for your help. I will continue looking, and perhaps wait until the regular winter sales.

You are confused because the shown layout is US not Danish or Nordic. If you read the details it says Nordic as I wrote. I also wrote for you to add 30% to get the price in SKR. It is not totally accurate but close enough within a few hundreds or less. I doubt that you will find anything better at the price even at the winter sale but if you find something you would like an opinion on please post a link and I will take a look. I did look at Komplett.se but found nothing suitable at the price level. If you want I can try looking elsewhere.

Huge thank you. That's a nice laptop, the Victus one. I owned a HP stationary once, that was a PoS, but I assume they have gotten better since the 90's. So it's possible to add ram to laptops? On a stationary I always did that myself, but I thought laptops was welded shut. They were that in the beginning. I'm old and my computer knowledge is very outdated.

They actually have a drive this weekend with 20% off, so even if I up the ram to 16GB it's still "only" just under 8k SEK.
I have to think about this.

@BylineBelife  That seems like a very reasonable price.  The Victus line is better quality than most entry-level gaming laptops, not to say they're bad, just that they're made as cheaply as is reasonably possible.  The next level up is laptops like the Victus and the Lenovo Legion, sometimes the Asus ROG models (depending on the year), and then you get to more premium laptops like Razer that are probably not what you want.

Pretty much all gaming laptops come with a bottom panel that can be removed with screws, plus occasionally a guitar pick or something of similar size to separate the panel from the rest of the chassis.  Inside, almost any laptop 15" or larger is going to have either two slots for RAM, or one slot and one module soldered to the motherboard.  The exceptions are a few smaller laptops, usually lower-end ones but sometimes also gaming models like the ROG Strix 14" laptops.  Regardless, finding out is one google search away: just enter the laptop model and "upgrade RAM" and you'll find videos showing exactly how to do it.

At any rate, it's more convenient to have someone else add the memory, and this is a cheap upgrade.  So if you like the laptop overall, it's a very good choice.

If you end up waiting instead, let me know if and when you'd like another second opinion or more help searching.

@puzzlezaddictHuge thank you. I have decided to wait, but now I have options I can afford if my current laptop give up on me. It's still running the games I want to play, even though it no longer muster DA:Inquisition or live mode with large families in S4, but I mostly build anyway, and play my single sim to test all the things in the game and recieve all the accomplishments and milestones etc.
I may return and ask for advice when the winter sales start. The "Mellandagsrean" is the big sale over here. ✌🎖
