I was having the exact same issue and I tried your suggestion (@puzzleaddict), however I do use mods.
So I removed my sims folder and rerun the app (with no mods), and I was able to get into cas. Then I added in my mods, and I was still able to get into cas. I added my old save files (from before the update), started a new save, and I was able to get into cas. Then I tried to play one of my old saves and I couldn't get into cas. So I believe it’s something to do with the old save files (not the mods), unfortunately.
Edit: I tried a couple of "experiments" with running the game with new/old saves folders, tray folders, saved games, and families. Playing one of my families from before this update seems to be the common factor when I get an error (which sucks because I don't want to start with new families).
I knew this update would ruin everything, but I didn't really expect it to make my 6 generation legacy family unplayable.
I'm going to give a bit of context before I get uselessly upset. I'm well versed in mods, I immediately prepared for this update the best way a mod using simmer could: I moved my tray, I backed up my saves, I started over with my 10,000 file mod list, I did everything right to conquer this update. And still, I can't get into my old saves, no matter what I try. If I take out the mods, the game hangs on load for hours. I understand this is a risk of playing with mods - I just don't think it should render all past progress (which in this game we are SO emotionally invested in hello?) completely inaccessible. And for eggplants?
Unfortunately this is THE gut punch that's gonna send me zoo tycooning.
