will this effect their relationships though? do you mean replace the “naked” sims with the cc ones from gallery?
@arbastyr If you save the game with custom content missing, the sims will lose the items and won't get them back even when the cc is present again. So try loading a backup version of the save. You might lose a little progress, but hopefully it'll take less time to catch up than if you needed to replace all the missing items.

@puzzlezaddict is right. You likely saved your game while CC was turned off. Unfortunately the result is permanent.
You basically have two options. You can do as Puzzle recommended and see if you can find a save from before, or manually re-outfit every thing and every one.
You CAN pull them back down from the gallery or your library, but you are correct. They will lose all relationships and job performance.
The best option is to find an older save. Other than that... You'll just have to re-do it ALL.
The key thing is this... when the game updates, DO NOT EVEN LOAD ANY OF YOUR SAVES. Not until you make sure your CC is enabled and working.
You've figured out what happens if you forget...
One thing you might want to look into... MCCC has an Autosave option. It's save my game more than a few times. It won't help right now, but it'll be a safeguard for the future.
