@LittleGraveRaven  Try playing in fullscreen and enabling vertical sync within the game's graphics options.  I believe the setting should stick right away, but just in case, enable v-sync, quit, reload the game, and then play.

If you get another crash, please try all of these, together:

    • Undo any compatibility mode you've set
    • Remove the Sims 4 folder in Documents\Electronic Arts
    • Clean boot your PC, and go through the Task Manager's background processes list shutting down anything that doesn't need to be running, including any Asus software
    • Load the game, enable v-sync, and quit
    • Start a new save in Willow Creek and see how it runs

Please also confirm that your in-game framerates are locked to 60.  Bring up the cheats console (crtl-shift-C) and enter "fps on" without quotes, and a number will appear in the lower left corner, over the UI.

@LittleGraveRaven  Please check for any new errors in the Reliability Monitor.  Hit Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes.  You'll see a list of errors and updates, with a column for each day.  (Today is all the way on the right.)

For any errors in the last two days that mention Origin or Sims 4, or any that happened at the same time as a crash, click "View technical details," then copy the information and paste it into a reply here.  Sometimes the Reliability Monitor doesn't update right away, so if you don't see any related errors, be sure to check back an hour or two.  The timestamp on the initial chart can also be off by up to an hour, so that's not an entirely reliable metric, but the one within the technical details should be accurate.

If you don't see any related errors, that's useful information too.

  • Thank you for helping with this, I really appreciate it. I have one crash from 8/21 at 6:18:

@LittleGraveRaven  Please do a clean uninstall of the graphics driver, and instead of reinstalling the newest optional driver from AMD, use the recommended (WHQL) one dated June 29:

    https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-5700-series/amd-radeon-rx-5700-series/amd-radeon-rx-5700-xt

Instructions for a clean uninstall and reinstall are here:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

When you test, please use another clean Sims 4 folder, just to be thorough.

  • I uninstalled Sims, did the clean uninstall and reinstall and it still does the crashes :/. I did it twice to be sure, deleting the files and the second time deleting the game all together and nothing.

I don't understand why it isn't cooperating, I'm really worried at this point.

@LittleGraveRaven  Please try playing in a new admin Windows account.  The username should contain only letters and numbers, no special characters, accents, etc.  Make it a local account, as in, don't sign into Microsoft, and don't sync with any other services you normally use.  You'll be able to sign into Origin and shouldn't need to redownload anything.

If you get another crash, please post another dxdiag and any Reliability Monitor entries from the time of the crash.  The errors might be the same as before, but it's better to check.  And please let me know if the Reliability Monitor doesn't have any relevant errors: that's useful info as well.

  • Ok! I will do that as soon as I'm done with some university course work, thanks

  • It did crash again, is there something wrong with my system perhaps? Or maybe origin? As the crash for both seems to be the path of the game. Here is the reliability monitor:

@LittleGraveRaven  This kind of crash is usually due to some kind of problem with Sims 4, not a system-wide issue.  One possible problem is having your game installed on an external drive.  While that would normally be fine, it does add a few complicating factors: you could have a bad cable or a bad port on your PC, or the drive itself could be defective.  Or, frankly, the data transfer speeds might not be keeping up with the game's demands.

The first thing to try is to connect your external SSD to a different port on your computer.  Please make sure you're using a USB 3.0 port, not a USB 2: the connecters for each are compatible with ports for the other, but USB 3 has much faster data transfer speeds.  If you're already using a USB 3 port, switch to a different one.  Your computer's manual should show you where to find the proper ports, but the easiest way to tell is that the internal plastic bit in a USB 3 port is blue.

If that doesn't help, please do a clean uninstall of Sims 4 and reinstall it on your internal drive.  If Origin is on your external, clean uninstall that as well; if it's internal, you can skip that part.  You can use your main Windows account.  Start by uninstalling Sims 4:

    • Put aside your Sims 4 folder in Documents\Electronic Arts (from the main Windows account) and rename it to something that doesn't include the words "Sims 4."
    • Download Revo Uninstaller (the free version is fine) from here.
    • Launch Revo, select Sims 4 from the list, and click Uninstall.
    • Once the game is uninstalled, select "Moderate" under "scanning modes," and click Scan.
    • Review the list, in case there's something you want to save; otherwise, click Select All, and then Delete.
    • Close Revo, and restart your computer.

    Next, uninstall Origin:

    • First, clear Origin's cache.
    • Quit Origin, then right-click on the Task Bar and open the Task Manager.  Scroll through looking for Origin entries.  If you find any, click on them and End Task.
    • Launch Revo again and uninstall Origin, and when it's uninstalled, select "Moderate" again and Scan.
    • If Revo finds any remaining registry entries, select all, delete, and click Next.
    • Revo will display "Remaining Data and Folders.  Select all of them except for the "Origin Games" folder, if it appears.  (This is where other Origin games are installed by default.)  Delete the rest.
    • Close Revo, and restart your computer.

Next, download the full Origin installer and run it.  Here's the direct download link:

    http://download.dm.origin.com/origin/live/OriginSetup.exe

Be sure to run both the installer and Origin itself as an admin: right-click on each and select "Run as Administrator."  When it's reinstalled, download Sims 4; you can just download the base game, to save time, if you want.

Restart after installing and before playing, and allow the game to create a(nother) new user folder rather than reusing your existing one.

  • Ok I will do that and see, I'm sorry this is being so difficult. I only moved the sims to an external device because I thought that may help. I'll move around the ports or put it back, I will mess around and see if that fixes it. Thanks!

  • I was actually able to play for longer than usual, the thing that crashed it this time was moving a room instead of the roof. Progress?😅

  • I decided to forgo the external drive, too many variables to go wrong. I did the clean uninstall and install and followed your instructions. It crashes when touching fences and wall paper/paint now. I haven't been able to play long enough to see if anything in live mode does it though.

@LittleGraveRaven  I'd like to see a crash dump from Sims 4.  It might not have any more information than the dxdiag, but it's worth checking anyway.  Click Windows key-R and copy and paste this:

    %LocalAppData%\CrashDumps

When you enter, you'll see a list of .dmp files.  If one of them is from Sims 4, please upload it to a third-party filehosting site (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) and link it here.

If there is no Sims 4 .dmp file, you can enable them:

    • Hit the Windows key, type "command prompt" in the box, right-click on Command Prompt in the search results, and select Run as Administrator
    • In the window, paste "reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\devenv.exe" /v DumpType /d 2 /t REG_DWORD" without the outside quotes into the box, and enter
    • Launch Sims 4 and wait for it to crash
    • After it crashes, wait for any crash dialogs to finish
    • Then hit Windows key-R and paste "%LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps" without quotes into the box, and enter
    • Upload the last .dmp file to a free filesharing site and link it here
    • When you want to undo the auto crash log dumps, open Command Prompt as before, paste "reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps" /f" without the outside quotes, and enter.

During all of this, please continue to use a clean Sims 4 user folder (no added content at all), and please play a new save in Willow Creek, just so that there aren't any complicating factors.

  • I did a clean install, and now the crash happens due to fences and much more rarely roofs. Does that change things?

@LittleGraveRaven  I've gone over your crash dumps and everything else in this thread, more than once, and I can't figure out what the problem is.  The crash dumps show that the game crashed due to an access violation, invalid pointer read, but nothing more useful than that.

You've already tried the usual tactics: clean uninstall and reinstall of the game, clean uninstall and reinstall of the GPU driver, changing the install location, new user account... even wiping your system, which is extreme but should have taken care of any other corrupt drivers.  Have you overclocked your system in any way?  If so, please undo the settings, even something as simple as running your RAM at its advertised speed rather than the motherboard's default.

If that doesn't help or isn't the issue, try playing in safe mode.  This will look and feel awful, but it's worth finding out whether the game crashes.  If it doesn't, the issue is likely a driver that is disabled in safe mode, or perhaps one of the few programs that doesn't get disabled in a clean boot.

If the game crashes in safe mode too, then I'd start to wonder about a hardware issue, although those usually present differently.  In this case, please list the make and model of your motherboard, RAM, and power supply.

  • Safe boot doesn't recognize my video card for some reason, causing visual problems. But otherwise, I got it to work. There was one crash but I believe it was due to the issue with the video card.

    My ram:

    Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz C16 DDR4 DRAM Memory Kit – Black (CMK32GX4M2B3200C16)

    My Motherboard:

ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi) AM4 Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 & 3rd Gen Ryzen ATX Motherboard with PCIe 4.0, Dual M.2, 12+2 with Dr. MOS Power Stage

My powersupply: Gamemax powersupply 800 watts

@LittleGraveRaven  There are a few places you can go from here.  One is to try an older graphics driver, not the WHQL one you previously installed and not the one you had before that.  I don't think the driver itself is incompatible with Sims 4, I mean we'd see a lot of other reports, but that driver wasn't loaded in safe mode, so it's a reasonable test.  You can find older drivers here:

    https://www.amd.com/en/support/previous-drivers/graphics/amd-radeon-5700-series/amd-radeon-rx-5700-series/amd-radeon-rx-5700-xt

Please only try WHQL drivers rather than the optional ones.  You'll need to DDU your current one any time you want to install an older version, but not the other way around, so you may want to start with the oldest you're comfortable using and work your way forwards.

A completely different direction would be to do some hardware monitoring.  Hardware issues don't usually produce the errors you're seeing, but it's easy enough to try.  If you want to, download hwinfo from here:

    https://www.hwinfo.com/download/

You don't need to install anything if you don't want to; just choose the Portable version, unzip it, and launch it from Downloads or wherever you want.  (If you would like to install, be sure to click the button for hwinfo itself, not for lansweeper.)  Restart your computer, and don't open any other apps.  Launch hwinfo, choose "sensors only," and click the icon that's a sheet of paper with a + sign to start logging.  Save the file to your desktop for easy access later.

Wait five minutes, then launch Sims 4 and play until it crashes.  Click the same button to end logging.  Then upload the log to a third-party free filehosting site and link it here.  Please leave it in .csv format, or if you use OneDrive to share, please compress it in .zip format instead.

  • At this point I figure its got to be a part of mine, so I got a loan from a friend and bought a new EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 TI GPU. Fingers crossed that fixes it.

  • Turned off cpu cores, 4 out of 12 cores on. Works like a dream again.
