Re: sims 4 keeps crashing in build mode

I have a new Alien ware computer. This just started happening during my last kit buy goth kits. I was fine building during with the for-rent patch, but now the game crashes, and I can't even bulldoze lots or save my progress.

@AmeliePoptart  Your dxdiag lists a number of crashes of Asus ScreenXPert Reunion, so try disabling that in the Task Manager before you play.  This app handles the secondary touchscreen, which is of course not necessary for Sims 4.  Please also uninstall the EA App with Revo Uninstaller (the free version is fine) and reinstall it—the App is crashing too.

When you want to play Sims 4, please restart your computer beforehand, and don't open any other programs, except of course the EA App.  Your laptop has enough RAM for the game itself but not to run a bunch of other memory-hogging services at the same time.

If you want to be thorough, try playing in a clean boot, to remove any influence from other apps, whether direct (conflict) or otherwise (e.g. excess RAM use).

The one service to leave enabled is the EABackgroundService, which the EA App needs in order to run.  Disable the rest as described.

When you reboot your computer, go through the Task Manager's background processes list shutting down any service that doesn't absolutely need to be running, for example anything from MSI Afterburner to RGB software might still be enabled.  If you accidentally kill a critical process and it doesn't restart on its own, just reboot your computer again.

Don't open anything other than Sims 4 and the EA App while testing, not even a browser window.

Having said that, I think at least some of what you've described this time around may be due to the in-game issues I mentioned earlier.  To be clear, there are a few that sound similar but are likely distinct:

    • Crash or infinite loading when loading or placing lot:  This appears to be due to broken items on the lot in question, as placing it unfurnished usually works.  This is unlikely to be the problem if you can place or load the lot some of the time, although placing a Gallery build on a smaller in-game lot, and thereby deleting some of the landscaping, may help.
    • Crash when loading lot due to leftover plates from custom recipes:  You should be able to load the lot in Build/Buy and delete the offending plates, or the fridge if necessary.
    • Crash due to corrupt sims:  You should be able to load the lot if you move the sims elsewhere using Manage Worlds.
    • I've also seen sporadic reports of corrupt lots, even blank ones, not related to the above.  In some cases, placing a Gallery build fixes the lot in question, but not always.

Given that some lots load some of the time, I'm not sure how many of your crashes could be attributed to any of the issues above.  But please do try to separate them out to the best of your abilities.  For example, if one Library or Gallery build always crashes the game when placed furnished, stop using that for now, and only use lots that work at least some of the time.  Similarly, if working with an in-game lot regularly produces crashes (even if not always), don't use that to test your Gallery builds.

  • @goddessapalla  I've split your post into its own thread since the other thread was quite old.

Does this crashing happen on all lots, in all saves, or is it more limited?  If you're not sure, please test a different lot in the same save, then the same lot in a different save.  If you're downloading houses from the Gallery, use different houses, and try your own saved builds or start from scratch as well.  There is an issue with certain Gallery lots where placing them furnished will crash or freeze the game every time, but that is of course not the only reason Sims 4 can crash in build mode.

If you use mods or custom content, please test entirely without them, as in, move the Mods folder to the desktop.  You don't need to save your progress.

This started in the realm of magic, and then I went to a different world to start a new build with the same lot size it kept happening. I went into the settings and restarted the app and did app recovery. Still kept happening. Then I tried to clear the lot, but the game crashed. I try getting a new lot from the gallery. still the same issue.

@goddessapalla  Please test with a lot you build on your own.  It can just be a box.  The point is to test with something you create now so you know it's clean.

If that also causes a crash, please test in a new save, again with something you build yourself.  If that's fine, try a Gallery download in the new save, but something very recent, say made this year, and not one of the lots you've already tried, and not a Residential Rental.

This has been happening to me since the latest update. I’ve started experiencing this in my Update Save (new, slowly adding in and testing mods), and it’s continued with completely vanilla new saves too.

Ive experienced infinite loading screens, and even complete game crashes. This mainly happens at random when I’m either:

    - Placing a lot from the gallery (infinite loading or saving) in either build mode or from manage world

    - Saving in build mode

    - Trying to open certain lots

This isn’t triggering any BE Reports or anything like that either, so I have no extra documents to read through or share.

@AmeliePoptart  Does this happen if you don't use Gallery builds, or even anything from your own library?  Does it make a difference if you place the lots unfurnished?  Many older lots broke a few patches ago, causing exactly what you're describing, so it's important to distinguish between crashes caused by certain lots and more general ones.

Please test with no mods or custom content at all, at least until the game is stable again.

It’s happening with a mix of in game lots (Waterside Warble), gallery lots, and lots I have built and saved myself. But also,  can happen when going into an empty lot — but not always the SAME lots. If I test too many lots in a row, my game will crash

    Here's a dxdiag.

For more info, because I tested again last night:

    - Problem is persisting in a brand new, completely vanilla save file

    - First crash was when I tried to place one of my own lots from the Gallery (I built this lot before the latest update) and the game went into an infinite load screen/ Building Lot screen

    - Forced to exit game by Alt + Tab, going into Steam, clicking Stop. No BE or Last Exception reports created.

    - Second crash occurred on same lot, this time trying to place the lot from the Manage Worlds screen. Same issue and process as above.

    - Third crash was a full Game Shut down, after I tried to open a different lot in Newcrest

This issue seems to be recurring more so in Worlds like Newcrest and San Myshuno. It's happened once or twice in Willow Creek, but not as consistently.
