screen freezes while gameplay still runs

I have both Growing Together and Discover University. Absolutely no mods yet. Anyway, my screen freezes every few hours while the gameplay still runs and the controls still work. It resolves itself after I press windows to minimise the game then go back into the game. Nonetheless this is very annoying. Once my sims almost overslept because I didn't know when to hit the pause button and wake them up. If I can't get a solid experience with two packs, I won't be buying even more packs to bug my game out with. While I may not be a whale planning to splurge out on every pack, you're missing out on a good few hundred dollars if I find that it's not worth the investment.
