Sims 4 - sims and time freezes but game still running and clickable

Hi, I've been unable to play Sims 4 for a few months now.

Within about 3 minutes of playing, the time freezes and all characters get stuck. I can still move the camera around, click on things, and even save the game (though this can often cause it to crash). Does anyone know why this is happening?

It happens to all families I try and play, not just one. Build mode seems to be fine, I can play that for ages.

I deleted all mods, reset the game, repaired the game, uninstalled and reinstalled the game, doubled my RAM, cleared out my laptop so it has plenty of storage, cleared all running tasks when I launch Sims, I have updated the driver for my Nvidia graphics card, I've made a clean folder, I've made 'high performance' my preferred processor, I've set my Sims gameplay to 'laptop mode', I've uninstalled and reinstalled my graphics driver (clean install). I only play the game with my charger plugged in. I've cleared out my fan.

My laptop was bought four years ago for extensive video editing (that's my job) so it's fairly high spec, but I'm aware it's not the newest model. I don't now use the laptop for anything but Sims - it's been completely cleared out.

My internal diagnostics look fine. The laptop gets a bit hot but not near its max temperature. The only issue is my CPU goes quite high - could this be the issue?

  • @jess_bry  You've done a lot already, but just to make sure, when you tested in the clean user folder, did you add any content to it?  If so, please try another clean folder, this time with zero content added: no mods, no saves, nothing.

Either way, please try disabling the EA App in-game overlay, notifications, and any other settings you can find.  If that doesn't help, put the App in offline mode before launching Sims 4.

If that doesn't help either, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.
