Sims 4 Already Running--Tried Everything

Hi,

This happened probably around a month ago. I've been playing this game for years, and it runs great on my computer. But all of the sudden, I started getting an error message that the sims 4 was already running. The game wasn't running, at the time and I've rebooted my computer many many times since then.

I've looked everywhere for solutions. I've done everything from clearing the cache and whitelisting it on my antivirus, to uninstalling the Sims AND Origin. Nothing has worked, and I've updated the game at least twice since this became an issue but haven't been able to open it. I haven't heard of anyone else having as much trouble.

I'd really like to play my game again. It's one of my favorites and this is frustrating.

The error code is ed35e0ea:29f00e76:00000000:18a1dd51

Any help is gladly appreciated! Thank you!!

  • @aramadilyish  Try running Origin as an admin: right-click on the shortcut and select "Run as administrator."  Then with Origin open, do the same with TS4_x64.exe.

If that doesn't help, please make sure that Windows Defender's Controlled Folder Access is either inactive or has exceptions for Origin.exe. TS4_x64.exe, and TS4.exe.  With a third-party antivirus running, Defender should be shut down entirely, but some people manage to have both active at the same time.  Here's how to find the settings:

If that doesn't help, pleae try disabling your antivirus, at least temporarily.  It does need to be ruled out as a cause, especially these days: since the November patches, Sims 4 is being blocked by default by a number of programs.

If none of this helps, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

    Hi,

Thanks for the tips. None of these have worked--it's not my antivirus, and this was happening before the November update. It started at least back to October, I think. I ran it as the administrator, but that didn't help either.

From what I know, dxdiags are for checking computer hardware, is that correct? I know that isn't an issue because I've ran plenty of very demanding games on this computer before and after (it's a gaming computer with a lot of power).

    Thanks

@aramadilyish  The dxdiag does a few basic diagnostic tests, but that's not really the point of running one.  The point is to provide information about your computer: hardware, drivers, error reports, that kind of thing.  It's a useful place to start looking for the kinds of errors that might help diagnose the issue.

Additionally, while hardware could be an issue in theory, this kind of error is almost certainly due to software.  Games can use many different combinations of runtimes and other resources, so saying that other games run fine doesn't eliminate the possibility of a problem with one of these resources.
